:hi: Isn't it about time our Football Players became a DISCIPLINED TEAM? :cheer:

I suggest the following changes for the New Beginning of Vol Football!

1. Take the Names off the Jerseys. We don't need Individualism. Its about the TEAM.
2. Require Haircuts that make the Team LOOK like a Team. No Hair showing from under the Helmet.
3. Abolish and Ban Beards, Long Sideburns and Mustaches. Lets Look like a Team of Clean Cut Humans.
4. Require Uniform Attire for the Vol Walk and Stadium Entrances. Do away with the Zoot Suits and Fashion Statements.
5. Have "0" Tolerance for Juvenile Delinquents. If they Screw-UP send'em Packing.
6. Stop ridiculous TD Celebrations. Let's actually act like we have been in the End Zone Before.

Just a few that will help show common goals.

Go Vols! Pound the Rock and Run to Victory :run:

#1 - I don't think this is really an issue.
#2 - If it was an issue, we didn't get into the endzone enough last year for me to make an evaluation.

Nothing personal but I doubt that will correct the discipline problem.

Every thing you mentioned did not deal with changing the individual player’s mindset from within.

Every thing dealt with changing the outside.

Though I could be terribly wrong!

Why do people care how people dress and celebrate? I have never figured that one out.

I think it is a function of team vs. individual.

I agree with you post but we are talking about boys/young men who are highly susceptible to peer pressure, group think, and mind control. If you don't beleive me then call your local armed forces recruiter and ask them why they target 18-early 20s age group? Get everyone acting like they have some self respect and sooner or later they will start to believe it themself.

I will not argue against strict discipline, I went through a state highway patrol academy for six months. Fun let me tell you!

I still do not understand how a zuit suit effects the play on the field.

I can understand an individual celebrating a touchdown but doesn't emotion play a part, they are excited after all.

What if it were a team celebration over an individual?

I don't get the complaints about celebrations. Anything slightly flashy will get you a flag in college nowadays. I do get a little tired of seeing defenders get up and start strutting after every single tackle

Get everyone acting like they have some self respect and sooner or later they will start to believe it themself.

Exactly . . . .

it's more about not being like marcus vick. i mean, it's one thing to create a more disciplined demeanor. just my two cents, creating more rules and making things more confined will just make things worse.

So you want to turn us into the New York Yankees??? Boy what a investigation that would be if Phil stays as the head coach :p....

The key would be to find a common ground for coaches and players. I'll assume this has already been done but you just never know.

1. I wouldn't mind seeing this. We need to send a message for 2006 that we WILL play as a team. To much "Me-ism" cost the 2005 team some serious chemistry and contributed, for sure, to the lack of success (e.g. the receivers' underperformance and dissent with QB decisions)

2. ??? Not sure how long hair contributes. Look at some of the old Packers or Steelers defenders -- weren't they a "team?" How about J Allen, probably our most legitimate "team player" from last year?

3. Yes. And shave their heads, bleach all hair blond, and color everyone's skin in tune with the Aryan way. Come on, it's football, not Harvard medical school. What in the heck is wrong with sideburns or facial hair???

4. What do you mean by "Uniform?" Do you mean they all should dress the same, like the band? Or all with the same color suits? Or in sweats? Just not sure that this doesn't sound a little gay.

5. Zero tolerance is impractical and impossible at this level. You are dealing with 18-22 year-old kids, and they WILL screw up from time to time. Punishment should be standardized, match the transgression, be prompt, and be public, so everyone knows what happens when you break the rules. If you just kicked off every kid that slips up once, you wouldn't have much of a football team left.

6. Are you talking about the NFL? Celebrating isn't allowed in college, to the point where any resemblance of such is flagged (see the ridiculous call on Vandy vs. Florida, 2005). I almost wish they were allowed to do MORE. Have you ever scored a TD, even in Sunday afternoon touch football in the backyard? I celebrate every time.

I like the no name idea (have posted that before), the dress code and hair thing sounds extreme to me, Zero tolerance won't work discipline must be on an individual basis but Phil needs to learn to drop the hammer just a little quicker IMO. As metioned before the jawing after tackles irks me, you did your job now get back to the huddle and get ready for the next play.

Very well said kiddiedoc. My sentiments exactly!

Winning brings a team together and fans off your back. Level of dicipline and methods vary by team. Takes a good coach to figure out what to do and not to do to get the right mix.

I want to go back to white shoes and orange pants while we're debating the dress code.

If it works who cares. Kind of like the ND with their green jerseys.

That sounds a great deal like the rules for the "team" Germany fielded in the late '30s and early '40s.

The difference is that college football is a voluntary activity. No one has to play. If you choose to be part of a team of people then sometimes you have to forego some individualism in order to maintain the cohesiveness of the group.

Exactly, and if UT institued ridiculous rules like this you can be assured that other schools would be glad to pick up the talented recruits we would pass on because they dare show some free thinking and individualism.

I'd say that the '05 squad exhibited a significant amount of individualism judging by the off-field problems and the fashion complaints that others have raised. It did not do them much good, did it? All this individual expression garbage detracts from the team concept. There is no "I" in team. I learned that when I was playing pre-K soccer. I think there are some Vols who need to be introduced to the concept.

i'm all for discipline, and Lord knows we need a healthy dose of it, but jeez, this is college...it's supposed to be a little fun, right? i hate the celebration rules. and as for facial hair and hair cuts, personnally, i agree, but i don't think it matters one bit what they guy wants to do with his hair cut or shaving habits as to how disciplined the kid is on or off the feild.....names off the jerseys, hm, i could go for that.

YES.

After thinking about it more, this thread gets my vote for "Lame Duck of the Week" award. You could change the title of it to: "Recipe to Guarantee Failure and a National Media Spotlight On Intolerance"
