Maybe the coaches never realized he was on the team? I mean, he's not on the roster.

Maybe he showed up as a walk-on but never really let them know, and so he just kind of did some drills and practices, and sweated a lot, and finally after none of the coaches ever gave him the time of day, he just wandered off to put his name in the portal?

That leads to an interesting question. Can you put your name in the portal if you were never officially on any team's roster?

Could _I_ put my name in the transfer portal, right now?

Made sure not to thank his college coaches.
He should go JUCO and then earn some starts beside his name and earn a scholarship back to power 5 if he's good enough

Or teammates. They may be among his friends, or maybe not.

How about this? What if he never even showed up for any of the practices?

Like, he wanted to go to Tennessee, academically, but his mom would only pay for it if he agreed to try out for the football team, like she was convinced he had the talent to make it, but he had no interest, so he went to school, and kept telling her he was a walk-on, but not really he was just going to class.

And finally she said something about going to talk to the coaches or whatever, which would mean the gig was up for him, so he told his mom he was putting his name into the transfer portal. So he could at least buy time to the end of the semester?

Something like that?

It's a dang mystery.

Isn't he a Freshman walk-on? I don't know how he's even had time to be treated poorly. There was barely an offseason due to Covid.
There’s plays to be made and his family feels he isn’t being given the same opportunity as fellow scholarship athletes. Understandable but that doesn’t mean it’s reality.

That is a good story of intrigue.

Might be true. As far as walk-on WRs go, I have to admit Montgomery is much better than average. But very difficult to crack the line-up given all the blue-chip Freshmen WRs we just brought in (Hyatt, Wideman, Calloway, Holliday, and Beckwith). He was facing an uphill climb to make the 2-deep for the entire rest of his career if he stayed.

I wish him best of luck. I think he could conceivably start at some G5 programs if he works hard.
