not in the SEC without backcounting

What happens if a school has one spot left and sends NLI papers to Hamilton and Patterson on NSD hoping to get a last minute surprise from one of them. They both surprisingly sign giving us 26 signatures and we can't back count? All hypothetical

Question.

What about next yr? We won't be graduating very many. Remember that will be kiffy's class which was half depleted. So if we're having to work to get to 85 this yr. think about next yr. prob won't be able to have a giant class which is sad. Recruiting is fun!

you better pray someone fails a class (joking) but you can't sign 26. Something would have to give

That tells me somebody has to be told not to send in their NLI til late in the day or after and conditional on missing on somebody. That's only thing I can think of

The school has to accept a LOI for it to count. It this case they would have to tell one of the recruits they could not accept his LOI.

I guess your right. They would simply not submit it to the NCAA. If so there are going to be kids sign with schools on NSD to find out a few days later its rejected.

.... tell several 2* and 3* recruits that they should look elsewhere for the 2012 class? If not, will the staff tell several current roster players to look at transferring because they will never see the field? If not, how does UT stay at 85 scholarhsips and continue to bring in more 4* or 5* recruits for 2012?

NUMBERS WATCH: With latest commitment, Vols would have 89 on scholarship | Gribble's Scribbles | GoVolsXtra.com

With the new SEC 25 max rule ,grey shirting will go away like the dinosaurs.

Appeared to be one of the best this year. The guy can get open and catch.

NMT, Nelson, Naz, Milton, Anderson, Pair, Gooch, Clark, and Jeffery. That's 9 I think that could transfer or not get renewed.

Doubt Rogers or Neal will be going anywhere.

Several like Anderson and Bullock can stay and do not need a scholarship.

Gooch should get a medical. He has never been the same post injury.

Some will be asked to leave from the current team (in a nice way that makes it clear that playing time is not likely coming for the rest of the time they are here).

I would say Milton and Nance will be two of them.

Our current class will probably lose 3 more as a guess, with two walking on, and 1 feeling recruited over.

I'm always amazed at the names that come up when people discuss players who would get cut from a team. It's always scrubs who the writer thinks can't play. It's never star players the team can't live without.

What we, on the outside, never know is what the real story is. We don't have progress reports. We can't see how homesick a player is. We have no idea how hard it is to get a player to do anything right.

Things we don't know:
1. Academic progress
2. Team chemistry
3. Player capability

Unless you have some crystal ball (or a mole on the team) you just don't know what's going on.

Wasn't aware Gooch was ever injured. Sure you're not confusing him with Cody Pope or Jeffery?

Not necessarily. I think several guys - Milton, Pair, Nelson - can play. Just not necessarily in the SEC when Dooley is clearly recruiting over them. I don't blame them if they want to go somewhere they'll see the field.

I agree on those 3 plus Nance.

He switched the week before the Buffalo game.

Who are we recruiting over pair? We're in on on one OL and he's a center?

Someone in the know. How does a gray shirt work. Kid signs a LOI in Feb and enrolls in January in the 2013 class. Can he attend any classes on his dime, can he workout in summer with team?

He can only enroll part-time and pay his way. He cannot workout with the team/practice nor attend meetings/functions. They are in a sense a normal student just going part time.

Got this from Bleacherreport.com awhile back...

Grey-shirting:

While most people are familiar with the phrase "red-shirt" most people have no idea what a grey-shirt is. In fact, the NCAA does not even acknowledge the term. In a way, grey-shirting is like the U.S. Army's Delta Force—everyone knows it's their, but the governing body doesn't acknowledge it's existance.

Here is how grey-shirting works:

A player commits to a team that is over-signed.
That player either doesn't go to school in the fall, or enrolls part-time and pays their own way. They are not officially on the team.
In January of the following year, that player enrolls full-time and officially joins the team. They are technically part of the recruiting class for the following year.

Grey-shirting is a way for schools to skate around the recruiting rules. It allows schools to over-sign, regardless of how many prospects they signed the previous year.

Every player has a five year window to play four seasons. That window starts the second a player is enrolled in college full-time or are on scholarship. Since the player is not enrolled full time and is not on scholarship, their "NCAA clock" has not started.

Once they join a team, they still have the full five year window and the ability to red-shirt if they so choose.

While grey-shirting, players are not on the team.

They can not practice or condition with the team. They can not be given any advantage not extended to the normal student body. Grey-shirts are not allowed at team meetings or functions either. For all intents they are essentially, regular students.

We have three tackles in front of Pair - James, Thomas, and Tiny. I suspect (complete guess on my part) that if one of them were to go down, Dooley would move Bullard to tackle and play another center, basically making Pair 3rd string. We also have the guys that redshirted last year - Kerbyson and Posey - that could conceivably leapfrog him. Won't really know until the spring. All speculation, but I just haven't gotten the sense Pair is in the plans at O-line as anything other than depth.
