Is this the worst Vol team ever? (merged)

The 1964 team seems pretty awful.

They were the last UT team to lose to both Vandy and Kentucky in the same season, something that seems likely this season. Their only conference win was over Mississippi State (sounds familiar)

4-5-1 Record, Shutout 3 times, and only scored in double digits 3 times all season.

The first Majors team was awful...but at least they gave effort. This team needs a heart transplant.

1977 was Majors first year back, and he inherited a mess.

1988 was literally just a fluke year.

This is absolutely the worst UT team that I can remember.

When I was kid, Richmond Flowers was my favorite Vol, if that tells you how far I go back.
My first Vol heroes were Walter Slater, Jim Powell and Dick? Huffman. Is the light fading in here?

'77 was terrible. '88 wasn't much better. This team stinks as bad as those wretched squads.

The 88 defense was as wretched the this years offense. At least there was a good freshman class on that 88 squad to make that decent run 89 though 91. Fulmer is leaving this cupboard dry for the next coach.

Majors also chose to reshirt Pickens and Webb in 88.

My UT football memory only goes back to the late '70s, but this year's team is clearly the worst I've seen in that time.

1962 was worse. Hanging on to an outdated offense (single wing) and getting shut out in several games.

I think I heard where Arian Foster passed Johnny Jones in rushing the other day. I recall his glory days. Fun times watching him play.

What's weird is that while they were 5-6...the 2005 team wasn't nearly this bad...they just got every single bad break that came...they lost 3 games by less than a TD...and Florida by 9 points...

The 2005 was horrible but far better than this team. There is a good chance we could go 3-9. If KY plays like they did today against us we will get embarrassed by them. I never thought that would even be possible.

When was the last time Vandy was favored over UT?

I dont remember. In 2005 they might have been. I think we were favored last year but it almost didnt happen. I would say its a safe bet to say that vandy will be favored over us this year.

The first game I ever watched was the 86 Sugar Bowl vs Miami. I don't recall a team since then that was this bad. It's like watching a team I dont recognize. IMO this one is much worse than 88 or 05.

I was a student in 1977. They weren't this bad. They put up 40 points on a couple of teams and dropped some real close competitive games. Lost to Auburn 14-12 after leading 12-0. Had some real undertalented players that fought hard all year. Pert Jenkins was a 219 lb defensive end that embodied that. I'd take them over this team proudly.

ESPN ran a ticker that said this is the first time the Vols have scored under 10 points three games in a row since 1964. That sums it up.

I have been watching the Vols on the field since the mid 50s. I saw J. Majors PLAY. Let me say first that I agree with letting Fulmer go - it is time.

The team this year is not near as poor as the teams of the late 50s and early 60s. (Before Doug Dickey arrived) I saw the lost to UTC and the riot that followed. The Vols ran the single wing then(which I loved), but we did not have the talent to run it well.

This team (2008) has just quit putting out the 100% effort that is required. There is talent there. A new coach will get us back on track.

I started following the Vols when I was about 7 years old. I'm now 63. I recall a period in the mid 60's after Bowden Wyatt left when things were bad, but I don't know if they were this dismal.:banghead2:
