Is this the worst fan reaction since Sciano?

Only delusional folks are upset. Kiffin/Freeze/Campbell/Fleck/Gus were never happening. Realistic candidates were Heupel/Napier/Chadwell/Elliot. Looking at the options I say we made a good choice. My pick has been Napier. Although I’m not upset with this hire at all.

People who thought we should hire Kiffin or Freeze are insane. Yes, they're better coaches, but you can't justify either of those guys with their track records when Tennessee is trying to convince the NCAA that this problem wasn't institutional and wide-spread.

Campbell/Fickell didn't even leave to go to Texas/Auburn... they certainly weren't coming here.

Realistic picks were Napier, Chadwell and Heupel (once White was hired). Chadwell makes me nervous because while he's done a lot, he's only done it one year which could be a blip. Napier shows steady improvement, but he also wasn't even contacted... which makes me wonder if there was any interest at all. Napier has turned down interest from Ole Miss (before they hired Kiffin), Miss State (before they hired Leach) and recently South Carolina and Auburn. There is a quote before we did our search that addressed that:

“He doesn’t want to take a job that already has immediate disadvantage built in before you play a game,” a person close to Napier told 247Sports.

There are a huge number of disadvantages here. My guess is he's biding his time for LSU/UGA/Bama to open up if they do at any point. Otherwise he'll just stay there.

This guy wasn't even on Danny White's list! He was literally down the hall!!

That's what ticks me off the most is we paid a guy all this money to bring in his buddy from the same school!

Unacceptable.

If he struck out with everyone on his list, then it makes sense he went to his buddy down the hall.

If Fulmer had made this pick, no one would have batted an eye.

White making this pick is quite disappointing.
It's an indicator that this job is perceived as pure trash by most great coaches, and it will be until we start winning again. It's way beyond time for UT fans to start accepting that. Nobody wants to come here right now, and hasn't for years.

what fan reaction? If I remember correctly I could not even get this page to refresh during previous days like this. Having no problem today. It would be really interesting to see how many people are viewing this web site. Any chance the past has turned folks completely off?

This.

Look I get we all talk about the 90s and Top 10 Wins and tradition and all, and how this is a Top 10 job....but that's on paper. In reality, it's not. It's simply not, even if it's just perception because perception is reality.

I think that too

However I don’t know who all White or the firm had contact with. I don’t know how many coaches said they weren’t interested.

Also I don’t know how bad this NCAA stuff is going to be. I’m fairly confident White does.....and he probably was open about it.

Probably not a ton of coaches wanting to come into this mess, especially after Pruitt got finished with it and NCAA headed their way.

I firmly believe that Freeze and Chadwell would have taken the job; however because of what has happened that certainly prevented Freeze from getting a look and probably kept Chadwell away as well.

I was hoping for much better, but it is what it is.

At least this guy has “some” HC experience, and knows offense.......I feel kicked in the nutz but we will see what happens.

We're in a much worse situation now than we were in 2017.

Back in 2017, Texas A&M/Florida/Tennessee were all looking for coaches. We were all (according to 247 composites) somewhat similarly talented (Tenn was #12, Florida was #15, A&M was #17). A&M had to spend $7.5mil to bring in a top-tier coach, Florida had to spend $6mil to bring in Mullen. Tennessee? We did what we always do and scraped the barrel with $3.8mil going to Pruitt.

For reference, Bama spent $6mil/year on Saban in 2007.

Now? We're #15 in composite talent and we are losing at least 1 5* to draft (Smith) and we're definitely losing 1 5* to transfer (Morris). We're also losing at least 5 4* players to transfers (Chandler, Gray, JG, Peterson, Toot). So the transfer landscape is worse, but at least our 2021 class is better than our 2018 class was.

With unknown NCAA response looming, it's nigh impossible to get a top-flight coach to come here unless you really open the purse strings... which I'm not sure UT was willing to do in 2021 and it certainly wasn't in 2017, 2012, 2010 and 2009.
Knowing that we had virtually no money in reserve, how would we go about affording that kind of salary? Get more loans and pay even more out in debt service?

Not no but H3LL NO. Schitano was not only a bad coach but had potential skeletons in the closet. Amazed how people mis-remembered the crap storm he had a Tampa Bay (11-21)......players diving at the knees of the opposing OLine in the victory formation (not one game but two!). He tried to hide Legionaries from the players at their training facility. Players there essentially had a Patrino type mutiny and ran him and the GM who hired him out of town. When he was being considered for UT, the OSU defense ranked 6th in the Big 10!! With multiple 1st rounders on that defense and in a weak league...6th??? He was fired from that job the next year. But somehow the pundits think UT would have been lucky to get him!!?? Thank God for the BIG HARD PASS on him!!

While you may consider the hire unacceptable- so what? You can stop donating to the school, stop buying tickets to games, stop buying UT promotional items but that’s it! Beyond that, as a fan, you really have no ability to impact any decision made by the AD unless you are in some position of power of which I am unaware. Some seem to have lost the ability to find any positives in UT sports. If that’s the case then move on. If winning is all that matters become a tide fan. No matter what the future holds I will leave this earth as a Vol fan. And I will enjoy the ride.

I don't know. I can understand the reactions. When Ohio State needed a big name, they signed a championship winner in Urban Meyer with big money. When Alabama needed a big name, they signed a championship winner in Saban with big money. Tennessee desperately needs a big name, but couldn't afford it I guess. We haven't gone after a big name since Kiffin and he was an up-and-comer too, not anywhere on the same level as those guys. You can tell me all you want that this is the right hire, this is the best we could do. That may all be well and true, but if it's the best we can do, then I have to seriously question how relevant Tennessee is to college football now. I have no animosity and wish the guy the best, but I can understand why people feel the way they feel.

No. I think people are just disappointed because it’s been so bad for so long, people want a guarantee of a sure thing.

And that just doesn’t exist.

How this will turn out, I don’t know. I do think he knows offense and when things settle down, Tennessee will score points and have an entertaining product.

But, who wants to hear they are going to need to wait 4 more years?

It would be a wait 3-4 year wait even if Saban came. This program is in a effed.

The tantrum over a guy with 28-8 record, solid showing as an SEC OC, and straight up whipped the wet dream of Kiffin twice, is beyond ridiculous.

Are there other names I would have preferred? Definitely.

Are there names that were tossed around that I would perceive as worse? Absolutely!

We had a much better caliber of Coaches in Kiffin, Fisher (to some extent) and Freeze saying they want us than we had high caliber coaches turn us down. The people that we targeted had already turned down other job without NCAA problems. All things considered, I don't see where this is some awful thing.
