Is this the most depressing time in UT history?

If JP gets us to 7-5 or 6-6 this season and bowling with this roster and schedule he deserves coach of the year no doubt.

I'm sure it is to some if not most. It certainly ranks up there but I don't let it drag me down into negative thinking. I try to lean positive on most of it and hope we are going to be improving and get back to being one of the better teams in the country. I'll support these players and coaches untill given reason not to.

I’ve been a Vol fan for 35 years now and this last 10 year stretch has been the worst ever I think in the history of UT football. My dad said it’s worse than the rough patch in the middle to late 70’s when Majors took over.

We just had our worst season ever.
We just had the worst coaching search ever.
Bama is rolling as usual. UGA has a real coach. UF hired a quality coach. Muschamp owns the Vols. Looks like we’re headed for 3rd or 4th in the East every season.

Has UT football ever been in a more depressing position? I’m almost 40 and have never seen our position in the landscape like this.

Sounds like you’re having a good day

Follow the men's basketball team, and the softball team. It will cheer you up

I want to be optimistic like many here, but I don’t even see us bowling this season. Unlikely we can close with a decent class after we get mauled all year, too. We desperately need some momentum and it’ll have to start on the recruiting trail.

Using this logic, no team that has ever been down can possibly get back up.

I'd honestly rather have someone like Pruitt who you have no idea what they are capable of, but have a pretty good resume from what they have done, than have someone from a lower level school that has hc experience but you know is never going to be a great coach. It's like promoting a great worker at any other kind of job that has been successful at every other position they've had versus hiring someone that has done the job but is not good at it.

Lol, this is the 3rd thread I've been in the this morning where posters have used the terms realist/realistic and then proceed to tell the future.

'I don't think that word means what you think it means'

My favorite... "You're just setting yourself up for extreme disappointment".

Lulz, I have a hard time even responding to that one.

Not Florida or South Carolina.

Florida is a hot mess, just like we've been, and South Carolina has a ceiling that isn't far above our floor.

Agree with you on Georgia, Bama, and Auburn.

Florida owns us even when they have worse talent.

USCe ceiling isn’t far above our floor? You’re still living in the 90s as they had back to back to back seasons with double digit wins and a #1 ranking recently. Some floor for us.

I know this is just a whine thread, but 82-JP makes some good points if we were going to take it seriously. In addition, as recently as 1977 the Vols went 4-7, giving them about a .500 for the years from 1975 to 1980. Neyland himself went .500 for two full years, 1947 and 48. Then under Wyatt the vols were pretty terrible from 1958 to 1964.

so anyway, the secret to having a happy life is low expectations. Works great for me. Based on history, I would expect the vols to win a national championship about once every 50 years or so.

No. We now have a competent athletic director and VFL at the wheel that is currently bringing us out of the incompetency seen with previous administrations.

Last year was an outlier. CJP will get us to a bowl game.

I'm with you as far as it being discussed too much. Too much talk never leads to anything good. But, communication is important in moderation imo

Yea, I know if we all agreed it would be boring. But I'm like KB as far as being excited. To me, football is supposed to be fun. Sometimes it sucks, but that's part of it.

We didn't hire Chip Kelly, Jon Gruden, Scott Frost .....or whoever, but who knows, we may have gotten one better than all those. Don't know. I'm gonna enjoy the ride. I bet we have a solid coach. We'll see if he's more than that.

There is no tangible evidence that Pruitt will do good here. I would have rather hired a coach with some previous HC experience such as Mike Bobo over Pruitt who i don’t think will handle the pressure and fans and media very well. I mean we are already witnessing that.

Your opinion. Only your opinion, ehh, it kinda sucks.

And I don’t know wth you think you’re witnessing right now, but I can tell you what I see. I see a guy trying to clean things up, trying to change the toxic, losing culture......and a guy raising expectations, all of which are badly needed.

And Mike Bobo? Good old 21-18 at Colorado State Mike Bobo? 7-6 for 3 straight seasons at Colorado State Mike Bobo? Laugh the F out loud. Your opinion has no credibility if that’s the guy you wanted. Might as well have kept Butch Jones, which is really the rub here ain’t it? You’re a Butch Boy.....you’re missing your boy Lyle, who think only needed 2-3 more years to get his system in place and really start winning. That’s it, ain’t it?

I’m guessing you won’t be on here much longer after we see Pruitt and his outstanding staff get this program moving up, this team competing again vs our rivals and this team winning games again.

You do realize that we just made a coaching change right? Let's see what he can do before we declare same ole same ole.

Yeah, let's hire a mediocre guy with hc experience.
Cause it's not like we just did that twice in a row with such wonderful results.

Fulmer in charge gives me the most hope for the overall health of the program. We might be too far behind for it to make much difference though.

Why not talk about it? He you nor I can do anything to change it, or change the future decision making of the program. So, why not use a message board to discuss it? We suck, we have sucked, and until this administration running ut proves otherwise, chances are we will continue to suck. Now, that doesn't ruin my life. It doesn't make me depressed. But, it seems to be the reality until evidence suggest something different

Which is why I will not be depressed over the outcome of a game or even the state of the program. When I finally came to the realization that sports is nothing more than another form of entertainment, I quit letting it control my mood.

Well said Behr.

Look, anybody who’s been on here for awhile would likely remember that I was full-on Butch Jones in the beginning, was 100% for giving him a chance, would go to the mat arguing on his behalf......until he proved to me, without a doubt whatsoever in my mind, that he wasn’t the guy and that he no longer deserved the benefit of the doubt. And by the end, I was easily one of his biggest critics on here....went from a sunshine pumper to a negavol within the span of 2.5 to 3 years. And nothing in his history/career whatsoever that suggested he had the ability and the coaching chops to meet the lofty expectations we all have for Tennessee football.

So I’m 150% definitely gonna give Pruitt at least the same leash and wiggle room I just gave PT Barnum....especially since he does indeed have the proven ability to coach and get his players playing at a consistent, championship level. Gotta do that as a head coach now, I get that, but there’s tons more reasons to believe that Pruitt and the staff he’s put together are gonna have light years more success than Jones and his MAC level guys. We’ll see.
