Could Gerald Jones get a chance to compete for a starting QB job? Coach Cutcliff said he loves the way Jones plays and that he has great QB insticts. He could be a great dual threat QB, like a Juice Williams. I know it will probably be Crompton's team next year but I thought I would throw this idea out and see what everyone thought.:)

I can't imagine that we'd go that route. Even guys that could run around like Shuler and Martin were more or less converted to dropback passers under Cutcliffe.

I'm not so sure that the 08 QB job is Crompton's. But that's next year...my interest is this Sat..

I thought I saw where he didn't really want to play QB in college. He was offered QB by other schools but didn't go that way.

I don't know if Cut will use him at QB, but Cheif could use him at LB. Did anyone else see the special teams tackle he had? Great stuff!!!!

The QB job will be wide open after this season. But, Jones will not be one of the possibilities. He has no interest in QB and he does not have the make-up to become a successful every down QB. He is a smart kid who knows his future in the NFL is at WR. Crompton/Stephens/Coleman will be the ones fighting for the QB job.

i don't think it's realistic for him to compete for the job as the #1 guy.

i do think though it can no longer be ignored that a qb that can move is a valuable asset. i think Crompton can flourish next season...maybe some rolling pockets, designed to let him create some space, give the WR's some time to get open etc...but i dont' think you can just rely singularly on a running qb....

Whoever it is I just hope it doesn't turn into any sort of controversey or indecision about who is the clear-cut #1. Those years always make me nervous, but it could happen especially if Crompton does not come right out and take the job.

Exactly. Cutcliffe shapes the kid around his offense instead of shaping the offense around the strengths of the kid.

You are 110% correct in that observation.

And I'm sure the offense Spurrier is running in Columbia is that same fun and gun offense we were used to seeing at Florida. I mean, it's not like Spurrier is having to change his philosophy based on the personnel he has down there. I mean serious... he hasn't spent the season leaning on his defense and playing closer to the vest on offense. He's just been stubborn and has tried to air it out all season, because like you've said, every coach molds the players into their system, not the other way around...

There's a huge difference between tweaking the offense to play to your strengths vs completely changing philosophies . . . which I'm pretty sure you know, but that doesn't make for good troll material.

There hasn't been a run first QB at Tennessee since Sterling Hinton . . . and he got benched.

millwood said that gerald would have gone somewhere else (VT i think) if he had wanted to play QB

Yeah... because Chris Leak ran the ball just as much as Tebow. Urban didn't change his offense at all for Leak.

I see your point...

I guess you werent watching when Leak ran all those option plays,......which he did frequently.

We have been told that there are elements of the spread in the Tennessee playbook and some option. So in essence, our offense should be able to be sculpted around the personnel.

And Sterling Hinton should have been benched. You're not gonna get me to pick Hinton over Andy Kelly.
