Is There a More Divided Fan Base than the Vols?

For the better part of the last decade, the UT fan base has been divided, and sadly, I see no end in sight.

A brief recap of our many divisions:

Pro-Fulmer v. Anti-Fulmer
Pro-Kiffin v. Pro-Fulmer
Pro-Dooley v. Pro-Fulmer
Pro-Dooley v. Pro-anyone else
Pro-Hamilton v. Anti-Hamilton
Pro-Pearl v. Anti-Pearl
And all shades of gray in between

Every day, a new way to divide the fan base comes to the surface. See today's Tennessean for proof (the coaching search is now Black v. White).

It amazing that UT fans aren't fighting in the stands over these divisions. Is there a more divided fan base in America?

I enjoy the back and forth on this site, but just like family, we can call one another names, but we need to stand together when others try. I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make other than at the core of all of the divisions is a love for the teams in Orange & White.

Besides, winning cures all that ails us. So in the words of the suddenly wise Al Davis, "just win baby."

In the end we're all Orange.... We may not agree on how to get to where we want to be but we're ALL in agreement on the eventual destination. That's kinda what makes it so great to be a Vol..... If we all bowed down and worshipped the coach no matter what we might as well be Bammers.....

Makes the world go round. Also helps pass the time between December and September.

True, but they've only had to go through it once so far and only with the football teams.

Sadly, UT is on round two in 14 months. 14 months. Did I mention, 14 months?
The Bobby Bowden drama has been pretty intense...but I see what you're saying.

I don't really believe we are any more divided than most other fan bases in the country. We are just more passionate. When you combine that passion with VolNation, undeniably the greatest fan forum in all of college sports, you get to see all of the opinions in one spot. This creates the appearance of division when it is really just the expression of our opinions, most of which are faulty(other than mine of course).

OK Vol fans, it has been over three days now. After all our initial impressions, those who think that Dooley will be great and those, myself included, who have their doubts, have gotten through the first fellings of excitement or angst, it is what it is. Dooley is the UT coach. I will support the team. As a ut fan, I have no choice. Now I have a question for the Vol Nation. When is judgement day coming. By that I mean what is the timeline or specific benchmarks, i.e. NSD or 2010 season, at which we are able to judge Dooley's performance on football success or failure, and not on our expectations, good or bad?

Every fanbase in the country (except for Florida, Texas, and Alabama, I guess) is divided into the Our Coach Sucks, Get Him Out Of Here camp and the You're Not A Real Fan, We Have To Give Him A Chance To Succeed camp. When enough people move from the latter group into the former, they change coaches and everybody reshuffles. Rinse and repeat. You can watch this play out on any football message board in the country.

I think all of us support this university, some of us just don't blindly support any and every coach hired. We all support our teams.

The most divided fan base in the country soon will be .... USC:dance2:

That's right-I hear that Will Ferrel, Snoop, and Nick Lachey are all pretty torn on the hire.

That's their current role call, right? I apologize if I left anyone out.

DoucheBag...Wild Boys!

To TXVOL07 I am not, but he is what we have so we must move on. What is your opinion of when and how he is to be judged.

Florida State.
Michigan.

The UT and FSU situations are not comparable. With FSU, the division was 90 percent wanted Bowden out, 10 percent supported him. Its just that the ten percent hapened to be comprised of a lot of boosters.

With UT, I'd say right now:

25 % actively support DD.
40 % want to support DD, just because he's coach of their team, but they aren't sure what to make of him.
20 % actively do not support DD and want someone else.
15 % have given up and don't care anymore.

He needs 3 years-given the mess dumped on him. If they aren't highly competitive with Bama and FL in 3 years, and winning 9-11 games and on an upswing we can all get restless...unless he goes 2-10 next year.

I do want to go on record in saying that I think we hit on this one. Imagine if he went 9-3 at La tech this year, and given the youth on that team and the improvements they were making (took Boise to the wire) it could have happened. He would have been a candidate for a lot of big openings-LSU and UGA to name a few if they have down years again and get rid of their coaches. This could all have been a blessing in giving us a chance to jump on a guy would could have had a lot of choices on jobs in the next few years.

I think I'll form an opinon after I see who all he retains as far as recruits, who he surrounds himself as far as coaches, and how handles the QB situation leading up to the O/W game.

Thus far, I'll say he has said the right things, sounds committed to the University, and appears to be a man of integrity and honesty.

If he showed up at a bar, I'd buy em a beer.

Basically, almost word for word, what people were saying about Kiffin in the first few hours ...

mehhhhh, I think people we're a little more vocal about their support for Kiffin. The "Lane Train" was full steem ahead very quickly, with a lot of passengers on board.
