I believe we as a nation do recognize our past wrongs. We teach about "the trail of tears" and many other aspects of Native American history. As far a reparations go I think it is insane. As a country we already support those who need help as well as those who simply don't want to work. And instead of blaming our unfortunate past of slavery for "the ills" of inner city minorities we need to reach out and teach them making poor choices in life does have consequence that last well into adulthood and in some cases for the duration of life. In other words if you got pregnant at 16 the odds of your being successful are almost nil. I do agree that what was done in the past was terrible but a great uniter should not dwell on, and pick the scabs of our past but bring us together and move forward. Obama needs to go back to the personal responsibility position he started with, though I don't think it will be popular with the minorities in question.

if we have to pay for reparations? shouldn't Africa too since they were the country who enslaved their own and sold them? Obama presidency is really going to be scary.

If you go back and look at it the large trading companies made huge amounts of money. Also the ships and companies in many cases were owned by European countries. There were quite a few slaves in Europe from what I understand, I wonder if the black descendants of those slaves have similar feelings toward the government of those countries. Maybe some poster better versed in European history can help me there?

Yes but the "Battle of the Kool Moe D concert" and "The Black White Supremacist" skits were better. He came up with classic comedy skits in his short tenure on comedy central. Genius stuff.

You know what is funny...if I hadn't watched the live coverage from Unity 08 last weekend, then I would have been bothered by some of the things said in this article. However, I did watch it and know the context of what he said in addition to other comments he said - and I wasn't bothered by it. Unity 08 is a conference of minority journalists, and this Native American reporter stood up and asked Obama if he planned to give reparations to make up for 500 years of wrongs done to the Native Americans and still continue today. Obama handled the question pretty well - which can't be easy. He said that it is a sensitive history and one we shouldn't forget.

After talking about this...Susan Malveau (who was a moderator) said...well, this puts us on the topic of reparations for African Americans. She wanted his opinion on that...and he said that he has always been of the opinion that the best form of reparation that the black community could every receive would be better inner city schools and more jobs for the unemployed. I don't think that this is all that bad of a stance and certainly doesn't strike me like the article you linked did.

Most importantly, it should be noted that he's not making this a campaign stance in the sense that he is out there talking it up...he was asked twice essentially before he really got into the topic.
