Think about it...

Why would Fulmer publicly announce he's "opening up" the QB position for competition this week...

What do we know already? Crompton looks head-and-shoulders better than Stephens/Coleman in practice but it absolutely does not translate to the field...

So what good does "opening up" the competition do...unless something drastically changes Crompton will still look better in practice than Stephens and hence will maintain the starting job even though he will be no more effective in a game than he has been yet...

I am starting to believe that the announcement of an "open" QB position was nothing more than fodder for the masses...a pure PR move

I think if Stephens was going to be the starter and get most of the snaps we would all know about it by now

Thoughts?

Yeah i'd say your probably right. If they were serious about making a change, then the snaps would have all gone to stephens this week.

If crompton gets the start and plays most of the game, then thats all it was PR. Phil's ego is so big its going to get his job in the end.

Isn't that funny? Most say Majors ego was his downfall in the end...

Now it could be the downfall of the guy who some say was the biggest hand in Majors getting axed...

To quote the great Morpheus..."Fate it seems...is not without a sense of irony"

I don't know about the biggest hand, but Fulmer definitely had the sharpest knife!

Come on...You all know that Phil thinks that this is his only move and it is only being done to make Crompton play better...Think about it, he has had no pressure so Phil thinks that this will make him play better like last year if he has to fight for it...Pathetic!...Pull his ass!:realmad:

A PR move would end in him actually doing something. Fulmer's still looking at the film, therefore so far it's just been a crock of s***.

Crompton starts, the boos get so loud going into halftime that stephens starts the 2nd half.

From everything I've heard Crompton was Fulmer's baby, so to speak. Others with much more knowledge around him saw more potential in other players. There are rumors that Clawson even approached Fulmer wanting a different QB before the season started, to which Fulmer said no.

The more I hear about this situation the more I hate it for Clawson if this is indeed true, because he has come in to a terrible situation with a captain stubborn enough to drive his ship into the reef.

Yeah but don't call phil a micromanager around here. You might find that your posts get deleted.

the first 4 games and 1-3 record should be enough to warrant a change.... I'll replay the 4th quarter of the Auburn game if he needs to study something. If Stephens doesn't play the majority of the game Saturday, I'm thinking Fulmer's daring the university to fire him...

Stephens = shortest leash in the history of CFB.
They will yank him in a hearbeat. Poor Guy.

I agree with you that it is all window dressing. They have been watching these guys since Spring. They know what each can do. Conventional wisdom says dividing the first team reps in practice will probably just result in more penalties and timing miscues on gameday. Someone is trying to placate angry fans without taking a PR hit from the pro-Crompton faction, which is still fairly vocal if somewhat diminished in numbers. Also, it is not an open competition if Coleman, Berry and Jones are not out there getting reps with the first team.
