Is the present SEC the strongest conference of all time?

Seen that one a while back. Pretty funny. To answer your question, yes it is harder to win a NC in the SEC because of the head to head conference games and the title game. That's the reason I was shocked when Auburn went undefeated a few years ago and didn't get invited to the NC game. That's when I decided a playoff system must be implemented.

ok... what about the first question. Has there ever been a conference in college football that is as strong as the SEC is right now? I think you could argue big 10 when Penn St., Michigan, and OSU were all good.

I have nothing to back me up, but I would think there were years when the old Southwest Conference and Big 8 were pretty brutal.

I don't think Penn State has been nearly as good as they were before they joined the Big 10.

Independent...Big 10...still good enough to beat us in bowl games.

You're right though...they were better before they joined the Big 10.

No - not even close. That honor goes to the Big 12, which in 1971 was the Big 8, when Nebraska/Oklahoma/Colorado finished 1/2/3 in the final polls with Texas, Texas A&M and Missouri all finishing in the top 15 as well. BTW, Nebraska destroyed SEC champ Alabama 38-6 in the Orange Bowl to win the NC and Oklahoma destroyed SEC's #2 team Auburn 45-19 in the Sugar Bowl.

Wow, that is pretty resounding proof of the best conference. Maybe the SEC is the strongest conference in history over a ten year period - from 1996 -2006? YES
