Is the only reason we continue on this course the money?

Exactly at what point does the buyout become reasonable? It drops one million in the next year. Is this all about stability? If so wouldn't an elite hire stabilize the program more than a coach that appears to be in over his head?

Nearly losing to Vandy and then being the team that loses to Kentucky for the first time in 26yrs warrants some instability. We don't want a stable losing record.

A homerun hire would most certainly instill more confidence than having this question mark for a coach (with a lifetime losing record) hang around any longer.

The question is who can we hire that is a homerun.

Gary Patterson. I still think John Gruden should be pursued. Perhaps the timing just wasn't right last time around and that he may be chomping at the bit to get back into coaching. I would throw down the gauntlet (aka. checkbook), and offer $4 mill/yr base + $500k bonus for a BCS bowl or $1 mill for a NC.

That is NFL kind of money (although not for top NFL coaches). The great thing about going after him is:

1) No buyout needed

2) That Superbowl ring on his finger

3) Every HS football player has seen his face each week on MNF

4) With that kind of resume and exposure, recruiting would not only get a shot in the arm, but go through the roof.

5) Did I mention the Superbowl Ring?

Simply, No. I think boosters and AD are a bit smarter than some of the idiots around here.
That is what Dooley better worry about. I think the boosters and Hart are seeing the dollars drain out of the local economy as we speak. It isn't the loss either, it is how we lost and the caliber of team we lost too. How in the hell can anyone see this staff getting us to the next level much less the promise land?

Let's just say that we lose 10k in ticket sales. And those 10K infuse about (and I think I'm lowballing this by a good bit considering what I spend on gameday) 200 dollars into the Knoxville economy and football program. That is 2 million per game in lost revenue for keeping an inept staff. It is more likely that you can't afford to keep an inept coach than can't afford to get rid of one.

One thing is clear as a bell. Whether its Dooley or whoever, until we get some of these recruits away from LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and Arkansas this is what we can get used too.

The one thing I think is good about Dooley is his recruiting ability. This year's class is very good.

I think the buyout for the next season is 5m. Then it goes to 4m for 2 years and drops to 2.5m in 2015.

Patterson wasn't interested last time, and the situation isn't much better now. Especially if we pull the trigger on a coach basically because of one bad loss, which is how it would be perceived.

Very few coaches get replaced after 2 season.
I'm on the fence about Dooley, but very disappointed in what I've seen this year.

I'm not really on the fence anymore. But I'm realistic enough to know that the program can't afford yet another coaching change yet.

Does anyone know if Patterson was offered, and what he was offered?

No coaches are ever offered -- or usually even interviewed -- except for the guy who actually takes the job. Amazing how it works out that way.

The heavy rumor during the last search was that our people approached Patterson's people to gauge interest and were pretty much turned down flat.

It is a financial turd sandwich for the next three years. I don't see Hart making a change yet but it's not like it is going to matter that much financially in the future.
