Is the media crying over Pruitt taking the Sabans approach?

Butch should have been on the hot seat after year 3 (2015) when we couldn't hold a lead in any of the big games we had. Instead we all heard how we were "learning how to win" for the next year. It bought him more time. Guess who pushed it? The media.

I don't disagree with the first part.
Beating UF and UGA and finding the top 10 for a short stint in year 4, plus his boss being on the way out with no replacement close to being made saved his bacon on a collapse at the end.
The media had nothing to do with it.

It seems that they may be, because Pruitt is keeping players, staff, and others from talking to the media. He is taking the Saban approach, and that is fine by me...

Welp, we see how well "Drop the Mic" with Jauan Jennings worked out last season now didn't we?

Or how about "Sign Language" classes with Rashaan Gaulden?

Of course there is also our little soap drama "As the Helmet Turns!"

Meh, we had gone from 5-7 to 7-6 to 9-4 (with those 4 losses being by a combined total of 17 points and against 2 CFB playoff teams). We had most everyone coming back for 2016 and there was every reason for expectations to be sky high. It wasn't just the media who was pushing the "learning how to win" sentiment. Most fans thought '16 would be our year. Butch didn't really crap the bed until the South Carolina game that year... it was a snowball downhill after that.

this is literally exhausting. why do we care about freaking autograph sessions? what is wrong with us? Go live your life and then in September cheer for the Vols and hope they have a decent year. Next year expect more. Then more the next year. Why we care about all the glitter surrounding the program is beyond me. Children I tell you...children.

I am more concerned about whether or not our players like him. He has yet to be a head coach. Saban had already won at LSU. Still Pruitt and company have accomplished plenty and he is the head coach, so these kids better be thirsty for his knowledge and fall in line or the new kids will steal jobs.

While I am at it, shout out to Eli in case he reads this! Good kid. Him and his girlfriend. I wish him and the rest of them much success this year.

Fine by me! Who cares what the media thinks, carrying around their egos and their penny ante feelings on their sleeves! CJP doesn’t care what they think! Better get used to it!

Can’t believe I just clicked on a Tennessean link. I’m slipping.

Tennessean/Nashville Banner used to be top notch newspapers that like several dozen across the country were ruined after gannett bought them out and made them part of their leftist biased media empire.

Now if you want a respectable newspaper, there is 3 sections of the Wall Street Journal, Drudgereport online and the "county newspapers".

This is correct. Anyone who thinks Butch deserved to be fired after 2015 is letting hindsight skew their memory. Practically no one was asking for him to be fired back then. People would have laughed at the suggestion. We were the hot pick of all the expert prognosticators that year.

True. If anything, Saban has gotten more condescending and snarky as time goes on, commensurate with the success he's had. Admittedly, I don't have much respect for the news media, so I actually find this funny myself most of the time.

If Pruitt adopts Saban's general handling of the media and he isn't winning a ton of football games, it'll get old reeeeally quickly. Every little thing he does or doesn't do - short answers, restricting player/assistant access to the media, etc., will be torn apart and criticized.

How coaches handle the media is so overrated. Just win. You can treat the media however you want to if you win. If you're not winning enough, you can be a Ronald Reagan/Bill Clinton behind the podium...you'll still get fired.

Saban's decline in civility pretty well matches the media's decline in intelligence. Not only do they ask dumber questions as time goes by; they have the gall to ask them again and again trying to force an answer.

I'm waiting for the day that a Saban decides to come out from behind the podium and "explain" things to one of the fools. My guess is they regularly handle 200+ lb linebackers, and a reporter isn't even going to be a challenge.

Feels like as a minimum you need to disinfect your computer (or whatever you read VN on), doesn't it? Maybe just straight to a toxic waste dump.

Boca’s a mixed bag for me. Witnessed his sense of humor and interesting valid sports takes many a time and enjoyed. When he gets a bur lodged in his poop chute tho? Full MTV Sweet Sixteen diva level stuff! I enjoy that others think you and I are in lock step all da time. You’ve called me out numerous times on my genius, whereas I always support your takes...evens when’s you haves the dumbs. :)

Contrary to how it may seem, I love me some Boca.

I don't ever have the dumbs, I'm just sometimes misunderstood. Lulz.

Back on topic.

Just win!!!

I hope not! If we hear anything about UT football from a coach (that's not an additional player) between now and the start of practice it isn't good.

It won't be good if he is as thin skinned as Butch was. I hope he treats the media like mushrooms. The more time he spends talking to them, the less time he gets to spend talking to current players or recruits.

Well, well, well.........all that bashing of previous coaches and now they got what they asked for and it don't taste so good. I don't care for the local media, they are a bunch of whining wantabes Birmingham does not pound on their coaches even before Saban. I don't like John and the rest of his girlfriends.

Pruitt just signed a contract, he ain't going anywhere and he is not going to take advice from a bunch of second rate sports writers who never played a down of football. I say good coach! CAUTION: winning makes all this ok..........ok?

GBO!!

I regret that I have but 1 like to give this comment. :hi:

For coaches in first time locations, more so if they are new head coaches, to say anything at all puts them in the "damned if they do and damned if they don't" spot. Now, our new head man has been on both ends of this saying. I for one wish for the less said the better. "Silence is golden" cannot be bad for a new head man..
Time and wins has proven to allow a head man to say and do just about anything he pleases.

If Pruitt doesn't win and win big... his schtick will grow very old quickly. It's OK to be a championship *******, just not an average one.
He comes off as very inexperienced, which he is. He'll need to learn quickly if he wants a long HC career.
