The Cadaver Synod: When a Pope’s Corpse Was Put on Trial

But if you go to the Basilica San Giovanni Laterano looking for such morbid attractions, you’ll find you’re on your own. What happened there over one thousand years ago is still too horrible to speak of. This is the church where Pope Stephen VI put the rotting corpse of Pope Formosus on trial in January of 897.

The trial was called the Cadaver Synod or Synodus Horrenda (since everything is more colorful in Latin). It ushered in one of the most corrupt eras in the history of the papacy, a time that’s now referred to in all seriousness as the pornocracy.

I had to go look that up. That is some twisted stuff

There is nothing worse than a man of the cloth who takes advantage of his/her position with minor children.

Having said that, I know there are a lot of good Catholics out there. I am Presbyterian and not Catholic though.

No doubt, but the institution is bordering on evil. They really thought it was a good idea to split hairs on whether some of the children were penetrated or just fondled and whether they were prepubescent or postpubescent children? Keep your hands off kids. Is that so f@cking hard.

I'd like to see the Catholic Church own it like the University of Maryland just did after that player died. The president said, The University "accepts legal and moral responsibility for the mistakes" and that "They entrusted their son to us, and he did not return home."

Much better approach than the Catholic Church decided upon.

I found out a lot about the decadence of the popes while reading, A WORLD LIT ONLY BY FIRE, by William Manchester.

It describes the digging up of the previous pope, dressing the dead pope in papal attire, propping his skeleton up in a chair, and the new pope spouting off accusations against him.

The book also describes how some popes had little boys for lovers, and others had female prostitutes for lovers.

In addition, the popes would accept money for papal forgiveness of sins.

The focus is the Medieval world. Manchester described how climate change was also taking place with severe storms that no one had ever before seen in Europe.

I don't disagree. I don't drink the Catholic kool-aid as I think they have been responsible for a lot of terrible things in the past.

Yep, total swing and miss. The Catholic church doesn't SUPPORT molestation. It obviously has failed and covered up egregious acts, but it doesn't promote this acts.

Covering up, allowing continued contact with children and the character assassination of some victims is supporting molestation. It fostered an environment of secrecy and acceptance that allowed these priests to victimize more children. It's disgusting.

And now the church is rationalizing the behavior of more than just few rogue priests by trying to justify the behavior of its priests by minimizing their actions.

Only one is egregious enough for people to take to the streets in outrage - which is the point of the meme.

I don't think Catholics in general are really any different in morality, I think lots of inter-christian fighting is a waste and generally over semantics. But I strongly feel that the upper levels of the Catholic church are about as morally decayed and sick as they come. But that tends to happen in large institutions our government is a easy example

I am not sure the Catholic church is evil, but they are pretty messed up. Very misguided in their beliefs in my opinion. Not all, but many. I think they border on heresy and are definitely doing a lot of false teaching. They seek wealth and power at an alarming rate and their power allows the church to cover up a ton of stuff.

There are a lot of "good" cops, also. But far too many in both groups seem to turn a blind eye to the obvious abuses that their peers are involved in. So can you really call those people "good"?

Disgusting

WTF?

Sexual abuse has been institutionalized, routinized and tolerated by the church hierarchy for decades. If you think this statement is hyperbole, consider that the grand jury report includes, but is by no means limited to, the case of a ring of pedophile priests in Pittsburgh, who raped their male victims, took pornographic pictures of them and marked them by giving them gold crosses to wear so that they could be easily recognized by other abusers.

You are splitting hairs.

Do they vocally support molestation or have anything in writing that supports molestation? Why of course not.

But public proclamations of support are one thing (i.e. words). The fact that you see an organized cover up of these acts shows (through their actions) that they support molestation.

If you are aware and ignore it, you are condoning it. By keeping these guys on the payroll, they are supporting it.

That is unbelievably sickening, and to make excuses for it.... I'm speechless.

These children abusers all deserve to be rounded up and shot, and whoever knew about it and let it continue to happen deserve to rot in prison.
