Is Tennessee like Bama? What would spread be Bama vs. UF?

The Minnesota Vikings have a great defense, good running backs, and a mediocre quarterback. Doesn't mean that we're anything like them either.

Oh and by the way any decent cornerback would look good playing behind Bama's front 7. Those guys don't look like anything special too me. Maybe Arenas on punt and kickoff returns.

Florida would be favored by 10-14 over Bama this week. UT is a 30 pt dog. That tells me that bama is 16 points better than UT. Tennessee has no depth at any position other than RB and DB---and freshmen figure heavily into that. Games are won in the trenches---and UT is woefully thin in both lines. Vols are 2-3 years away from competing with Bama, UGA, and Fla--depth wise.

I think UF would be favored by more like 8 or 9 against Alabama, not 14. Alabama is really good.

IMO about 10 points of our 30 point spread is because of the hype about Meyer stomping Kiffin. If Fulmer is the still the coach -- same team (minus Brown and all the other freshman), same Crompton, same crappy OL, just no ESPN-fueled "revenge" factor -- then we'd probably be more like 18-21 point underdogs, not 29 or 30.

Either way, Alabama is a long way ahead of us right now, in basically every area that isn't "Eric Berry."

At this point, Bama has a lot more talented depth on both sides of the ball. Saban will use that depth to win games this year, by wearing down the opponent and putting in fresh legs in the 4th qtr. Just watch.

Eric Berry is in a league of his own, so there's no comparison.

Until McElroy has a day like Crompton did against UCLA, you can't call him mediocre.

Bama hasn't had the luxury of depth in a long time. UT brought in a top class last year and will do the same this year. Take it from experience, it's gonna take a couple of years to get a stacked team that's talented as well. UT didn't just fall to the wayside over night, and it won't be playing at a top level over night either.

Y'all got a good coach and he has surrounded himself with proven winners. Have patience and we'll meet in the SECCG in a year or two. Roll Tide!

Take Tebow away from UF and we might be favored by a field goal.

Take Tebow away and I'd say Bama would be favored by maybe 7-14 depending on what they had back there.

Tebow is everything to that team right now. Without Tebow....they survive. With Tebow...they thrive.

Hey I appreciate all the good comments and I appreciate the Tiders chiming in civilly too. Rodney King would be proud.

Good points made all around. I enjoy discussion like this.

UF was a 10 pt favorite over bama in the Ga dome---so it would be at least 14 in Gainesville. Fla would be favored by 30 vs UT---regardless of the UT coach. NO DEPTH---and UF has better talent at every position except one---maybe 2. Florida's 2nd string is better than UT's first----for the most part. Freshmen don't help much in a game like this. Just watch the miscues.

The only clear advantage UT has over us on either side of the ball is the safety position, but that would be true even if we had Rashad Johnson back this year. We don't have world-beaters on the O-line, but they are working as a unit and were a pleasant surprise in the VT game. I would even give us the advantage at RB due to depth that we haven't seen at that position in many years. Crompton vs. McElroy is no contest right now.

If UF and UA lined up on a neutral field today I believe UF would be favored by about a touchdown. If our O-line continues to perform well the spread might drop to a field goal. Take Tebow away from UF and we might be favored by a field goal.

If UT continues to recruit well you will show steady improvement and should be able to contend for the SEC title again in 2011, provided LK really is a good head coach (he has surrounded himself with capable assistants, which is half the battle). For now I don't blame UT fans for having unrealistic expectations. Bama fans had to endure that situation for several years.

Good post

I think it would be:
UF -12 in the swamp,
UF -6 at bama

And I agree that the current 30 point spread is inflated because of the perception that Urban Meyer is actually a jedi knight who can simply use the force to make the final score whatever he wishes it to be.

I do sports betting every week during the football and basketball seasons---doesn't make me an expert or anything, but I do follow spreads closely.

Florida (at home) would be favored over 'Bama by 12.

'Bama (at home) would be favored over UT by about 14.

Bama is talented for sure. I think they would give Fl all they could handle. Their defense is the best I have seen. Including FL. Saban is a great coach and an even better recruiter. Bama is back for sure.

With all that being said. I think when you watch Bama you are looking into the future a little bit. Saban knows great defense's is what wins championships. You don't have to be great on offense. If you play great defense and have a good running game. Can throw for a high percentage on 1st down. You can win.

I do think Kiffin's approach is a little different in that he wants a little more explosive offense. But ideally they are the same. Be great running the football and set that up by being able to throw for a high percentage.

It is going to take Kiffin longer to pull off what Saban did. For one reason alone. That is QB play. UT is dreadful. JPW and McElroy are exactly what Saban is looking for. Smart efficient QB's who are not going to put their team in bad situations. Crompton and Stephens are the exact opposite of that.

I think UT is a better team than they are getting credit for right now it is just impossible to overcome the horrible play from you QB. I think our starting OL is good. I think they are every bit as good as Bama's. We don't have nearly the depth. But the first 5 can play. We will backslide a little next year. Our RB's are a push IMO. Hardesty, Brown, Oku, Poole all are extremely talented. Bama is loaded in the backfield as well. Bama has better WR's because of Julio Jones. He is a monster.

Defensively, We don't match up anywhere but the secondary. We are extremely deep there. The LB's at Bama aren't matched anywhere in the country. They are the best and playing in a 3-4 they excel. LB's are the weak spot of this UT defense. I think that is where UF will hurt us tomorrow. Their Backs and TE's will have big days we can't cover them. We will play a lot of nickel with Berry up but he can't be everywhere. UT's DL is getting better but doesn't compare well with Bama's front. They are huge and keep people off those LB's and allow them to make plays.

So all in all. I think we will see Bama vs. FL in Atlanta. I think it will be a great game. But I just hope everyone knows we are coming. It make take a few years. But we will get back to where we have always been and that is playing for championships. It is just a matter of time.
