Is Scott Frost qualified?

Hiring Frost before seeing him coach against any power 5 school is a mistake. If he goes 13-0 and lands in a NY6 Bowl, that in itself is not a reason to hire him.

Has he even fared well against Power 5 schools?

He’s the perfect catch 22 coach for us. Because of early signing period, we can’t afford to wait and see him coach against a top team in a NY6. However, hiring him before seeing him coach against a top team is a major risk.

Too many unknowns with him.

So we should watch him LOSE against top teams...like Mullen...THEN hire him? :good!:

Frost has to rely on a bowl game to even get a chance to compete with top teams. Mullen gets that 4-5 games per year.

Hands down Mullen is better option.

So then Campbell would be an even better option?

Campbell doesn’t have a consistent track record. Runs off on OU and TCU and drops to Texas, OSU, and WVU....

Not bad for a second year coach but Campbell isn’t worth the financial investment to go out get without knowing what he brings to table.

I wouldn't even say just Gruden.

If it's a Frost or Mullen and there have been rumblings of Patterson and Petersen, can you imagine the mess?

I don't want the equivalent of another Butch at Tennessee, and Frost is exactly that.

Wtf are you smoking?

National championship QB currently 10-0 = HS trumpet player @ Ferris State?

We want someone consistent like Mullen who consistently loses.

So, today's news about Kelly turning Tennessee down is rather revealing to me. First thing is it shows that Currie is going after top notch coaches. I like that! Second, it proves that Gruden is not in play. Currie would not offer Kelly if Gruden was interested. Third, it removes two top coaches that are not interested in Tennessee. I am fine with that. I want a top notch coach that wants to be the coach at Tennessee! At this point, I don't know who is on top of Currie's list. I really would like to get Patterson, but I don't believe he would leave what he has built at TCU. I would think Frost and Mullen are at or near the top of Currie's list. Either one of those coaches would be great hires for Tennessee! We just need to be patient and get the right man. Too many people are worried about this recruiting class. The right coach will get the job done!

Beats top teams at Iowa State. Mullen may be able to if he goes to a better school. :dunno:

Let me say this.....i believe a group of boosters really wanted Gruden and went through the back channels and his agent said he wasnt interested. That being said i believe some boosters continue to try and push. I believe Currie has been active with other possible candidates. I believe Frost is Currie's favorite and has a agreement in place.

Havent talked to Vick. Vick is a great HS coach though.

what is Grider doing now? You a SP or Marion guy? Even Whitwell was tough this year. Lots of good football in Marion County.

After Gruden, Peterson, Patterson...Frost is who I want the most. I like that he's coached on both sides of the ball and has played in both college and NFL. Recruiting would be my biggest question, but if Butch Jones can pull in top 10 classes I have no doubt that Frost could. Tennessee recruits itself and Frost seems like he has a likeable personality.

I would wonder who his assistants would be? I'd really hope that he could keep CRG for recruiting and his coaching abilities.

Campbell is at a school worse than miss at and has beat some really good teams. Mullen cakes his pants in big games.

I would take Campbell over Mullen. And Frost over both

You might appreciate the comments of Jeremiah Johnson, the current defensive coordinator at Northern Iowa, and Mark Farley, head coach at UNI, who had this to say about Scott Frost:

“[It’s] because of how he connects to players,” Farley says. “It’s all about connections to players. He’s at that stage in his life where he’s worked for some tremendous people and played for some tremendous people. So, he’s got experience offensively and defensively as a player … he can relate to alumni and relate with boosters. He’s the whole package.”

“He’s sharp, now — Frosty is one of the smartest people I’ve ever met in my whole life,” Johnson laughs. “I guess [his rise] is not that surprising to me, because he’s Frosty.

“People like Scott. He can talk to anybody. He can connect with anybody. And I think the thing that Scott does that always impressed me was, he has a way to make everybody feel important. You know what I mean?

“I think it’s genuine. I think he’s a genuine guy that can [relate to] the people that he comes in contact with … I don’t think it’s hard anymore for recruits and parents to find a phony, and I think Scott’s very real and very genuine.” Nebraska? Tennessee? Oregon State? Scott Frost's friends think he'd be perfect fit in Power 5

Those attributes would play very, very well at Tennessee.

I think he is but he is more of a risk than other's. Urban was a head coach for 4 year's before Florida hired him.

Mullen’s Talent is significantly worse than his “big game opponents.”

Context is not a friend to you i see.

It's hilarious how many arm chair QBs think this guy or that guy is going to save this program. Nearly every argument is false equivalence based on the filter of the poster. Let's have a real hiring conversation where we talk about the needs of our program and which individual has demonstrated the skill set to meet those needs. I'll throw a few out in no particular order:

1. Great recruiter outside their natural geography (TN has good talent but we need to poach talent nationally).
2. Develops players to max their potential (Something Saban and his staff are one of the best at)
3. Proven they can hire top talent to build out the staff (Do their assistants go on to success elsewhere?)
4. Makes adjustments that are impactful during the game
5. Can relate to boosters and fans (or wins enough no one cares) to maximize incoming $s.
6. Strategic and tactical proficiency (do game plans tend to be successful and does the team execute the plan?)
7. Is not named Butch Jones

I am sure this list is incomplete at best but I hope that it allows us to have a discussion and not just name "their guy" out of emotion.

Out of all the names we are hearing or are available who fits this mold?

Mullen is not a great coach. Strong is not a great coach. There is plenty of proof supporting this. They are a safe hire and we will be better than we are now.

Frost is certainly more risk but a much higher ceiling.

You can go safe or you can go for the fences. After Kelly, gruden, Peterson and Patterson turn us down, Frost is next up with a high upside.

I will honestly be happy with either of these three. I rank them Frost, Mullen, Campbell, but the truth is that either of these guys could win us an East title soon.
Please be one of these three!
