Alabama went 7-6 and end up with the no. 1 class in the country. Fulmer went to the championship game and ended up #36.

Granted part of Fulmer's staff left, but that still doesn't explain the huge difference in the recruiting classes. I'm beginning to think Saban maybe a better recruiter then Fulmer. I think a lot of those players would have wound up at UT if they hadn't have committed to Alabama.

Did you see the list of prospects from the state of Alabama this year? Saban is a good recruiter, but without that instate talent they probably aren't top 10

How do we know that?

Saban is a good recruiter. I'm not willing to say he's better than Fulmer because Saban has never recruited anywhere but a university with a huge in-state recruiting base. Saban can have a "bad" year in recruiting at Alabama, but still sign the best of the kids who grew up wanting to wear crimson, and have a very good class. Fulmer doesn't have that luxury.

not a good year to compare head to head imho. bammer pulled in 33 recruits compared to UT's 18, inflating their overall standing. We knew this would be a small recruiting class going in.

besides, we'll need to see how many future bammers get caught with their hand in the money jar :)

This year at least, Saban got the best of Fulmer and Tubberville. I heard somewhere that Wilks was the only prospect who comitted to the Vols despite being seriously pursued by UF, UGA or Bama. I think the Vols only won two hard fought recruting battles this year: Abrams-Ward from NC; and Wells from Ole Miss. Considering that Nutt got the big prize (E. Davis) and Butch Davis got Zach Davis (among others in whom UTK was intrerested) I think the best you can say is that the Vols got a push with UNC and Ole Miss.

Without question, Saban is a better recruiter and evaluator and developer than Fulmer.

Here's some facts about this class....

Of the top 5 players in TN, Bama got 3 (UT got 1)

Bama and AU went head-to-head with official offers on 15 kids. Bama got all 15 of them.

AU got 10 kids from the state of AL...none of them had an offer from Bama.

26 of their 32 signees were rated 4 star or higher by either Rivals or Scout, or both.

It's about to get nasty with Saban there. Call me scared all you want. If he hadn't followed the exact same pattern at LSU (check out LSU's 2001 class-his first full recruiting effort in BR which included Clayton, Spears, Hill, etc) , I might not have such a clear vision of Bama's future.

that kind of says it all.

That wasn't the question, though. I agree with your sentence, but as a pure recruiter, I think Fulmer gets it by a slim slim slim hair. Both are exceptional.

id have to say Saban deff. is, not just because of this year with Bama...but go back to his LSU days when he turned them around to what they are now...he goes after high profile people and lands alot of them...id give the edge to Saban, a few years ago i might not have...but my how times change

Call it a wash. You can't argue that phil does a exceptional job. The small talent pool in this state makes it tough on him. Put phil at a florida or georgia and he'd have top five classes every year. His coaching ability's however are reserved for another discussion.

Not sure if I agree. Fulmer has been great in the past, but in this world of "what have you done for me lately", I think that Saban would get the nod.
One class doesnt make a recruiter however so this next year will REALLY tell who is better.

I believe that word "recruiter" in this threads question needs to be examined as well.
Are we talking---Who can get the highest rated players, or ---who can evaluate talent the best?

Saban is a great recruiter and a great judge of talent, but so is Fulmer.

Saban even was good while at LSU, but one class at Bama doesn't make him great. Like what was already said we'll see next year.

Fulmer must be doing somethign right because y'all challenge for the conference champ almost reguarly.

Right now he is.

But Phil Fulmer has been a consistent top 1-10 recruiter his entire career.

Saban is a better recruiter (look what Les Miles inherited when he left LSU). Then his first full year at 'Bama he brings in a scary class.

He is a better coach than Fulmer too. He has a winning record versus Phil and in two of the Saban wins Phil had MUCH more talent but Phil and his staff were out coached. '01 SECCG and this past debacle.

I won't be long until Saban will have 'Bama beating us every year like Florida does with Meyer. The ship has been slowing sinking for the last 6-7 seasons. It will never fully sink (almost did in '05) b/c UT is such a big school but will never ever sail again w/ Phil at the helm. His better days are way behind him.

SEC Championship or a BCS Bowl or Phil is out of there if I'm the AD but as we know - I'm not. Our AD loves four loss seasons and Outback Bowl visits along w/ his coach.

There isn't a BETTER recruiter than Phil Fulmer in the country. There are a ton on the same level, but recruiting Louisiana isn't hard, as Les Miles has shown. Alabama's state talent this year was sick.
