Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of Wilcox. Always felt there was more hype surrounding him.

It has seemed like Vol fans were afraid to lose Wilcox all season. To me, this puts a little excitement to things, not only for coaching but also because this guy could make some noise with all his connections in talent rich south Florida.

I'll be interested to see if he can make a splash for this years NSD.

More afraid of losing Sirmon by association. At least that was my view. But the beauty of a Shannon hire brings his name recognition and possibly Barrow to fill in the Sirmon recruiting gap.

Xs and Os...even maybe Shannon is better. Wilcox was doing a very good job. Name rep for recruiting it is a HUGE step up. Why do you think we are supposed to get Pender and Diggs now?

As shown before - 5 Cane defenses out of 6 in the top 10 at the end of the season with the other being #28 in his 6 seasons as DC. This while coaching a team with a reasonably tough schedule that always had a big target on its back.

Not even close. Wilcox may get to his level one day - maybe.

Wilcox is a fantastic defensive coordinator. Highly underrated by most Vol fans.

Shannon is better.

I checked at the NCAA site :compute: . Shannon was DC at Miami from 2001 to 2005. Nationally, in total defense, his team ranked:

2001 - 6
2002 - 7
2003 - 2
2004 - 28 (seems to be the anomaly)
2005 - 4

No too f'in shabby.

In fairness, Shannon was working with more talent that Wilcox has been. I think it's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison.

Shannon was working with more talent, but Shannon was also getting elite results. Wilcox hasn't had a chance to work with the kind of talent to show whether or not he's in that group (and he's done great with less), but the benefit of the doubt was with Shannon. He has the track record.

Wilcox is a very good young defensive coach. His stint in the SEC showed me he still needs a little seasoning to compete against some the best offensive minds in the country on a weekly basis. Boise is a good team, but they would be middle of the pack in the SEC. Getting a team ready to play an SEC team one week is different than getting a team ready play an SEC team almost every week.

He just wasn't quite ready for it. Talent was down, but the basic mistakes this team showed consistently over the last 2 seasons cannot all be dismissed away as youth.

He is better prepared now, and should do well at Washington after his experience at UT.

Who else remembers when that #2 defense of his in 2003 got beat by that team from Knoxville? Ah, those were the days.
