I have not been to a football practice of about tem years and I do not have enough information to accurately analyze, in detail, what happens during practices these days. However, from what I have seen in the practice reports, it appears to me that game type contact seldom occurs.. I see a lot of QBs throwing against air, but never throwing where the receivers who are covered man on man, If this is true, both the QBs and the receivers are not being challenged, I see offensive linemen and defensive linemen going through the motions, but never gutting it out trying to block or get off blocks, I see receivers running backs running to defensive back and and the defender jumping in the air to similate a tackle or a block. I see very little which makes me beleive that enough is being done to prepare the players for the speed, technique and timing needed to play the efficiently. How can we expect for QBs an receivers to adjust to game conitions when game time conditions are not practiced, especially players who have little if any experience at the collegic level?

In baseball, do I expect a batter to be able to hit a curve ball he he doesn't practice hitting curve balls? In tennis, do I expect a player to seve or return balls unless they practice serving and returning serves? In swimming, do I expect a person to practice strokes on the concrete beside the pool and be able to swim if I throw him/her into the water? In track, do I expect a plevaulter to cleat 18 feet if he/she do not practice trying to cleat 18 feet. If I expect these thing to happen without practice, how can I expect football players to perform without real live game like practice.

I realize that this is purely speculation on my part, but there seems to evidence this is the case during our games. I am sure we have some good talent but I am not sure they are getting game-like practice. This is just my opinion. Take it for what it is

It's practice, coaches, players, facilities, AD, administration, fans, execution, high beer prices, youth, inexperience so forth and so on. There's no lack of excuses at TN.

There are problems.
Those problems have to identified and solved. Why not try to identify and solve? What e are doing now hasn't worked during the first two games.

It all starts with the QB

As much as I hate saying this Cowherd is right. Football is won by a good QB and the same coach

Nothing less.

Honestly, I was thinking some of the drills looked lame. I never played football though and I would imagine that these are the same drills the NC defenses and high octane offenses were asked to do by these same coaches. So, I am thinking that is not the answer.

You do realize that the videos of practice that we see are small tidbits of basically warmup drills and fundamentals. Then the media has to leave before 11vs11s and game like stuff happens.

Simple answer

Yes

Pissed away practice time is the downfall of many coaches.

However JG and the receivers timing issues are on them. This crap should have been fixed over the summer.

I understand your point. BUT regardless of the "kind" of practice between JG and his targets on any pass route, he just doesn't throw the ball on time... (usually waits to long). The team as a whole seem to be rounding into shape, both mentally and physically to about what I was expecting this year. JG, for me, is the "hold back" right now and I don't think anything can change this problem with him. Time has run out for this "timing problem" to be overcome.

That is why I stated , based on what I have seen, so yes I do realize that what we have seen is tidbits. I don't think that changes what I wrote.

One of the problems that I am sure takes place in practice is that if the guys you compete in practice against are not any good, how do you get better?
