Is playing on new years eve a bad thing?

Outside of BCS games I don't think there is much interest in any of them for fans that cheer for teams not involved in the game. I will turn a game on just to watch football, but I don't by any means "make plans" to watch any game other than the one Tennessee is playing in. If I get to watch other games, great. If not, I've don't feel like I have missed anything

Not to mention we would be playing freaking Northwestern.

Yeah nobody wants to watch that. Playing a ranked team certainly helps. If I would had to choose though between a boring win over Northwestern and an exciting loss to Virginia Tech, I would choose the win obviously.

I don't think I would have worried going into a game against Northwestern. Virginia Tech certainly does.

I'm not sure how many people outside of the two fanbases of the teams participating get jacked up for the Chick Fil A Peach Bowl no matter when it's played, honestly.
Probably true. In fact, I'd say that holds true for most non-BCS Bowl games except for a matchup here and there.

Northwestern would have been a lose lose situation. If we win, we don't get anything out of it, as far as recruits. If we lose, it looks terrible losing to a weak Big 10 team.

Same reason nobody wants to go out and play Boise State.

Dude, you really need to check out the ratings from past games. You're wrong on this one.

Nobody watches this bowl game because they have to watch the Peach Bowl every year. The game gets good ratings because they have good matchups. If they had bad matchups, they would have crappy ratings. That's the same for every bowl other than the BCS Bowls.

Not when you consider that 11am eastern time is 8am on the west coast.

I've gotten up for past Outback bowls when we were playing in them, but there's no way in hell I'm getting up to watch Auburn that early.

I know what time it is on the west coast. I live out west. Why the hell all of you believe that nobody wakes before noon on New Year's Day I don't know. Football fans suck it up and wakeup at whatever time they have to do so to watch the games whether they're hung over or not. Non-football fans aren't watching the games anyway.

I'm not sure if it's just luck or what, but year in and year out, the Chik-fil-A has definitely managed to put together some of the more intriguing matchups.

...which was my point. It's the matchup that matters, not the bowl game. However, if you had the same matchup on New Year's Day, there would be more viewers.

Agreed . . . No matter how good the matchup is, a game at 8:00 on New Years Eve is more or less "appointment viewing" whereas a game on New Years Day is bound to attract casual viewers.

It is mostly the matchup for bowl game viewers. Most college football fans will be at least semi-interested in this game. I would be willing to bet it gets a better rating than the Outback and Cotton this year. Traditionally it is a more viewed game than the early morning New Years Day bowls:

08-09 Season
Cotton Ole Miss- Texas Tech 4.40
Outback Iowa-SCjr 3.10
Peach CFA LSU-GT 3.90

07-08 Season
Cotton Missouri-Arkansas 3.5
Outback UT Wisconsin 3.37
Peach CFA Auburn-Clemson 5.09

06-07 Season
Cotton Auburn-Nebraska 3.70
Outback UT-PSU 4.36
Peach CFA GA-VT 4.78

05-06 Season
Cotton Alabama-Texas Tech 3.70
Outback Florida-Iowa 2.38
Peach CFA LSU-Miami 5.22

04-05 Season
Cotton UT-Texas A&M 2.6
Outback GA-Wisconsin 3.6
Peach (before CFA) Florida-Miami 5.0

I don't think many non-Tennessee/non-Virginia Tech fans will be making plans to watch this game on New Years Eve. I live in the midwest and I don't know of anyone who will stay at home or is planning on getting together to watch the game. They love college football though and would never miss a game when a state game is played. That's the only reason I'm asking this question. Do you think playing on new years will hurt the viewership? I hate to say it but I think it will. I think more people outside of the south would watch it if it were a day game.

I guess in the end it doesn't really matter what non-fans watch the game. It matters what recruits watch the game. After some of the recent incidents, it would be nice to recruit kids staying in watching football on new years eve. Nothing wrong with kids partying but it's better when you don't have to worry. We could use a break.

No; New Years Day 11:00 AM EST (8:00 AM PST) is a much better time slot. Everyone is up early watching Football on New Years Day.

Every New Years Eve party in America will have on the only football game that night which is The Chick-Fil-A Bowl. While women socialize in the kitchen, men will gather in the "TV room" and watch this game.

I think it is great time slot.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Never been to any party that there wasn't a sporting event on a tv somewhere in the house. Bonfires don't count. :)

Don't forget we've got Memphis-Tennessee bball game right before our bowl game... I certainly wish both were on another day! I'll be on vacation in DC (wearing orange of course) and probably only get to catch a glimpse of each!

Once again, that's ridiculous. More people watch football games on January 1 (no matter what time the game is played) than on New Year's Eve.

No, bburger is right easily. Even if people aren't getting together on New Year's Eve specifically to watch the game, a lot of people will just have the game on while they talk, drink, etc. Even if they aren't fixated on it, it's football and it's the only game on, so a lot of people will be glancing at it. I've seen this myself in years past, especially since this bowl game is usually one of the better "name" matchups pre-BCS. On New Year's Day, most high school kids/recruits will probably wake up around 1030 or 11, meaning the ones outside of the Eastern time zone probably won't even be awake when the game starts, and they would not be in any hurry to get up early to watch Tennessee play Northwestern. There is just nothing exciting about the Outback Bowl matchup.

Where is everyone on NYE? Bars. What do they put on tv's at bars? Sports. What is the best (out of the few) sports game on NYE? The Chick-fil-A Bowl

Exactly. In primetime, people have the choice between this game and the end of Minnesota-Iowa State. Not hard to see what bars would choose.

And as far as what GAVol was saying, it's a good matchup because it pits one of the best ACC teams against an SEC team that may not be elite that year, but is almost always a big name (because there are a lot of those in the SEC) good enough to give the best ACC teams a good game (because the ACC sucks). So you end up with matchups like Georgia-Virginia Tech, Auburn-Clemson, LSU-Georgia Tech (even though the actual game sucked, people got excited about the matchup), etc. By New Year's Eve, after all the New Orleans Bowls and Humanitarian Bowls (Bowling Green-Idaho this year) and Little Caesar's Bowls of the world, people are desperate for matchups like these.

More people will watch a game on new years eve night then would at 11 am on new years day.

I think a lot of people will watch your game that ordinarily wouldn't when its on NYE.

Recruiting-wise...we REALLY need to see the Monte defense from early in the season, rather than the latter half. I was really surprised...we can't blame too much on injury, as it was only the MLB that was stretched thin.

L. Thompson played most of the year, as did McCoy...and then we had JJ out for a few games, but that really was about it. That cannot be sufficient cause for us to look as inept as we did against Ole Miss and at other times.

That is why I think we lost out on guys like Luc...they saw our defense as average, and that didn't impress them...Monte or no Monte. So, if CMK and CEO can have the D playing lights out in the bowl game, I think it will spark some interest once again in the guys who were/are considering us.
