Is over optimism blinding us all from reality?

As the season approaches and I read the forums and the comments made by many Vol fans I can't help but wonder if we fans are refusing to accept reality due to our love of of the University of Tennessee. Examples are when players are here they are worshiped and said to be the best player to ever wear pads and the minute they leave or decommit they weren't worth having in the first place. The next example is with recruiting. So far we have 4 commits for 2011 none of which would probably even have gotten a second look in the past but now because Dooley recruited them they are all going to be studs. I personally am concerned about this program and the mediocrity we are all starting to accept with glee. Yes I support the program and every player in it including the coach but I just hope fans keep it real and call it like it is instead of looking like idiots and being happy about things because "THEY" said so. Who the hell is "They" anyway? "They" includes Hamilton, The Sports Animal, Dooley and etc. Have your own mind and call it like it is. Big orange fans are the best and we deserve to keep it real...

I'm done :)

Everyone deals with it their own way. If someone wants to have a positive outlook about the football program, who are you to say they shouldn't? Let people think what they want to think. I think a lot of people on here know what the deal is, but would rather have a good attitude about it instead of bashing players and coaches. Do I think we're going to win a National championship anytime soon? No. But I do like to think we'll be competitive and that we'll be getting some good players to put on the Orange and White. At this point, that's the only thing that makes it worthwhile, especially when I'm cutting my VASF check.

Bottom line, let people think what they want to think. If they want to think nothing but horrible things about the program, then fine. If they want to think that we're going to be fine in the future, then that's ok too. That's what makes the internet great. Free exchange of opinions and ideas.

Have you ever read a single post from one of the guy who posted above me or his crew that I like to call the Kiffin Kum Katchers? This board is not overly optimistic. I myself, who would be on the side your talking about, believe at best we finish with 8 wins and will probably finish with 7 ... not exactly a grand year, huh.

Comparing Kiffin and his supporters to the KKK. Aren't you just a classy fellow.

that's why I said a positive fan base...
I agree that an overly optimistic coaching staff can be a bad thing. They should always prepare for the worst. But a fan base can never be too supportive. And considering we can't really change anything, there's no reason to b**** and moan about everything that happens that we don't like...

You can be supportive and have doubts about a coaching staff. I do. I like Dooley and support him and hope he does great things here. I just don't think he will.

I think Kiffin Kum Katchers is pretty &*&&^% funny and on point at that. I am a realist by nature and believe a 6-6 season would be a reasonable accomplishment with where this program is right now after Fulmer and Kiffin.

However, I am also an optimist and hope (with the key word being "hope") that we do a little bit better. My real hopes, however, are in the future. Rome wasn't built in a day, and this program is not going to be rebuilt overnight either--especially after Fulmer's failings and the Kiffin screw job.

Finally, does anybody think it is funny that there is a USC advertisement on Vol Nation right now for an on-line degree?

I can concede to that. I don't think we'll do all that well. I'm just not going to post negative things unless they are at least interesting. It's the same old mundane things that are being said 600 times a day that start to bother me...

All i can go by is what ive seen from the man this far. I think hes done a good job with the hand hes been dealt. With every thing this team, this program has been thru the past 3 years, anything above 6 wins will be an accomplishment to me.I feel we are gonna have to gain some confidence and respect back in this confrence and then things will turn around for us.JMO

It might be funny, but on point? Really? Comparing Kiffin to a group that lynched men for the color of their skin is "on point"? I'm not a PC guy by any means, but goodness.

Optimism in the face of adversity is usually considered to be a virtue, one that eventually leads to success.

Just my :twocents:

I don't understand how you would think this board has been overly optimistic.

Neither can I. If anything, it's filled with more naysayers than positive spinners. I am pedicting a 6-6 regular season record and I think I have a far more positive view of the '10 season than most posters.

Actually I am refering to an old porno I once watched and just added Kiffin's name to and changed the C to a K. The KKK part just happened to end that way. I view, the group I am talking about, more of an on their knees kinda crowd than a racist crowd.

Pc crap also gets you drilling in 5,000 feet deep water instead of 200 feet water. PC crap ain't my kinda bag man.

With a few notable exceptions, I don't see many people sheeping out for Dooley. Some of us are certain he's destined to fail. A miniscule number are acting as if he's the New Age Bill Parcells. Pretty much everyone else is waiting to see what he puts on the field.

I agree that most are taking a wait and see approach. My beef spans the last several years and the stock fans are putting into recruiting services in general. There aren't too many towing the line for Dooley, but I can't wipe my butt without my elbow hitting a Rivals or Scout sheep. People take a look at a two minute highlight tape, and all of the sudden they're a bonafide college scout.

I'm not defending the class. Seeing Florida or Bama on an offer can be reassuring, but there is an awful lot of politics involved with these recruiting services.

BSU beat teams we lost to and finished way way way behind alot of people in rivals rankings. Rankings can matter but not always.

Okay, my apologies. :hi:

And I am not a PC kinda guy either, at all. I did think though that you were really going over a line. I hate Kiffin too, but even I thought that was just totally crazy.

Like I said, my apologies :hi:

Show me a player's offer list and I'll be confident assessing him without ever seeing him play. Show me his Rivals or Scout ranking and I'll simply say I don't care.

I agree stars really aren't that important (they do help the morale of a program though), but I do think the offer list is important to look at.

Or we could all be depressed just because our four commits haven't been pimped out to recruiting services sufficiently enough to earn their highest ranks. 4 out of 25....

This. Once again, the guitar finds its mark.

Go Vols.

hat, i agree completely. The offer list is usually a very accurate "Cliff Notes" version of a recruit's potential.

Still, much like the NFL draft, there are always a few "diamonds in the rough" who slip past the major schools.

Here's hoping Dooley can find them.

Go Vols.
