Just curious to what VN thinks. There are many posters who keep up with Tennessee football more in depth than I do and, have more football knowledge.

It’s just that since his time here, CJH has taken two rejects from P4 schools and sent them into the league. Nico fell flat on his face tonight playing with another team while our new QB looked very good against a decent P4 team which was very good last year. Coupled with “anonymous” sources stating “system” and such, is it CJH’s system making QB’s look good?

When I hear system QB, I think about Houston of the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Yes and no, Heupel’s system can make someone that isn’t a household name a household name if they can do 4 things relatively well. Make the right decisions on time, turn a sack into a positive play, hit open deep balls at a reasonable rate, and have very good short yardage accuracy.

They don’t have to have a big arm or elite athleticism or be 6’4 220. They just have to be capable of moving the chains and hitting the deep balls when they’re there.

It makes a QBs job easier if they can do those things, but it’s not just a system that any starting QB can play in and make the playoff. We weren’t a playoff team with the Nico we saw tonight, but could be now with Joey if the defense gets it together because Joey does those things well

I think Hooker getting cut by Detroit may answer your question
That has nothing to do with it. Hendon was a great college QB. One of the best in his two years here.

In the NFL he was a 26 year old rookie who was forced to miss his first season because of a knee injury.

Som great college QBs never pan out in the NFL. Hell Clausen went undrafted and never made an NFL roster other than a practice squad. The only Vol QB to receive any meaningful playing time since Manning is Josh Dobbs.

If it was solely due to the system, there’d be similar results no matter who was under center, right? And there’s not, so, no. It still takes a QB to run it. It still takes downfield accuracy to stretch a defense and make them honor the long ball. It takes quick reads, etc etc.

Don't forget Heath Shuler , he was given a shot and really didn't pan out. Hooker just didn't seem comfortable the few snaps I saw him in pre-season Not sure why. Could be his injuries, not working with A team players, or coaches not letting him have playing time in practice ?

Lincoln Riley, who’s put 4 QB’s in the pros said if your system isn’t QB friendly, it isn’t a good system. Now let’s look at his QBs:

Baker…was in the wilderness after getting dumped by the Browns but is a tough SOB at the QB position and a leader. Has found himself in TB

Kyler….incredible talent 🔝 10 pick in 2 different sports. Year 7 and still waiting for his breakout.

Jalen Hurts…elite competitor and leader. Is he the most talented? No. But gets the most out of himself and his team wins

Caleb Williams….still early but like Kyler, all the talent in the 🌍 but does he know how to play QB?

These 4 guys were all really good/great in college. But the best 2 are probably the “least talented” Jalen/Baker but they have the intangibles needed. QB isn’t just throwing the 🏈

Can you manage a game? Can you avoid negative plays? Third down/red zone/2 minute. It’s so situational. The term “game manager” was meant as a shot at QB but that’s the basis of how to play the position ultimately.

CJH's system definitely sets a QB up for success. However, Aguilar has the potential to surpass the last 2 QBs because he can make the reads faster both pre and post snap. He probably doesn't have the arm talent of Milton or Nico but his pocket presence is light years ahead of the last 2. Too often Nico and Joe took off too soon when their 1st read was covered or they threw it away. Aguilar throws a nice deep ball and it looks more catchable. Some of his misfires could be first game jitters and I'm glad we have ETSU next week so he can get adjusted to playing at Neyland before we play Georgia. He is going to be fan favorite this year for sure. I wish he would have slid on his long run but I think that's just who he is and his teammates probably love him for that.

It has more to do with Heupel's coaching and QB development than "the system".

I'd say it's more like Heupel looks for QBs that fit his system and then develops them, but there are good college QBs that wouldn't necessarily fit into the Heupel system.

Every QB’s success is somewhat related to his coach’s system. But Heupel’s system is not so great that you can plug a Joe Milton or a Nico I Am ‘a Leavin and have success with it. His system helps a QB look better, but it can’t make a guy into something he’s not.
He plugged Milton in and won 9 games.

It’s a very QB friendly system but the deep ball has to be there. His system works on heavy run and making the defense respect the deep ball enough to not completely sell out to stop the run. So you have to hit a few deep balls or take a respectable shot in each game. Just my non-coach take.

and what is Heupels system?

The 2023,24 offense is absolutely NOT the same offense as we saw last night.

Forget the QBs and just watch the Arkansas game of 2024 and Syracuse game of 2025

It’s NOT THE SAME OFFENSE.

Our QB looked good last night. Some may say better than he did at his previous school. Kinda like the kid that bombed for UCLA last night and the two QB’s before him. The last two mentioned didn’t fare well at their previous schools and first mentioned didn’t fare as bad here as he did last night.
