Is Neyland still in the top 5 for capacity?

Neyland was probably the loudest stadium in the country in the 90's. The place was ready to erupt last year against Alabama but the team kept disappointing. It was electric in the first half and we had chance after chance to jump on them early. Don't blame the fans if the product sucks. It will be loud and feared again soon. From 1995-1998 only one home game was lost if I remember correctly. I graduated in 1997 and there was plenty of old-timers in the stands. They'll cheer too if their 10K donation means a better product.

neyland did used to be very loud... like a roar.. anybody else think that the crowds at other sec schools are more shrill, for lack of a better word... just different?

In my recent experience (which has been limited this decade), Neyland is not as loud as the swamp or death valley. I went to Jordan Hare in '03 and was suprised by how loud it was. Right now, it is still louder than Sanford stadium and bryant-denny...

I thought I had received permanent hearing damage at the end of the Florida game in 2004. It is physically impossible for a stadium to get much louder than it was at the moment that field goal went through. The upper deck, and I mean the whole thing, was SHAKING with the roar of the crowd. People were cheering and having to cover their ears while doing so.

The stadium renovations will help recruiting. There is no question that Neyland is a much better place since the project began. We have traded a few seats for a better place to play, and that can only help.

The noise and the energy in the stadium are directly related to the performance on the field. I did not attend a home game in '07, but I will submit that the noise level at the UF game in '06 was as high as I have ever heard it in my 30+ seasons.

Can you blame any fat cat, or frat boy, or blue hair for not being overly inspired last year? Apathetic fans don't cause crummy football teams. Crummy football teams cause apathetic fans. Bring a rival into Neyland in a nationally important game with an inspired UT team that has a chance to win, and the place will be just as electric as it was whenever the good-ole days were supposed to have been.

Same here....that's the last time I can remember feeling "Neyland Magic".

One of the loudest times I can remember would be at the 1994 UT/Alabama game. Yeah we lost but UT went up sometime in the 3rd Qtr. and the place started getting pumped. The kickoff the Alabama guy caught it in the endzone and hesitated then took off and got LEVELED at the 10 yard line and the place exploded. I thought it couldn't get any louder, and I was wrong. 2 downs later on 3rd down, after UT had stuffed Bama twice, was the loudest thing I've heard outside of a Metallica concert.

Preach on, brother! My favorite thing (sarcasm...for the intellectually challenged) is sitting close to some jackass who honestly believes anyone on the sidelines or the field is actually hearing his insane rants...much less listening to them. How many times have we heard someone yell out something like, "SCREEN!!!" or "FULMER, YOU'RE AN IDIOT" or "WATCH FOR THE FAKE!!!"? The "watch for the fake" is especially priceless when the punter for the opposing team is standing in his own end zone and it's 4th and forever. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you are probably the jackass I'm talking about.

Another one of my favorites is the "I-Knew-Crew". You know the ones...they always say, "I knew they/we were going to _________." They never reveal their clairvoyant episode before the play, but they give it up after the play all the time.

So pretty much what all of you are saying is that you're all a bunch of frontrunners who think you only need to cheer when something good happens? Ok, now i definitely know why Neyland and TBA suck when it comes to loudness.. thank you all so very much for clearing that one up for me. :thumbsup:

Did anyone say that's how we prefer it to be? I can't help what the other people in the stands do while I was cheering. The point is that there have been plenty of loud moments and several embarassments in the last few years. You can keep the snide comments to yourself.

I thought it got pretty loud in 98 when arkansas fumbled and we recovered it.... Long Live OVERSTREET!!!!! GO VOLS!!!

I'll pass your regards to Overstreet :hi: He came back and completed the MBA program at UT. I'm in my first semester of the MBA program and on Monday he'll be in to talk to us and answer questions about his new company

Besides once the rest of SEC gets its act together and starts ***** slapping Bama again, they only way that they fill that stadium is to say there's a nascar race with naked Female beer vendors giving away free beer.

Soooooo true. I was in the endzone Wilhoit kicked to and I'm telling you the rumble just from people jumping up and down was loud. My wife and I had to yell into each other's ear just to hear what the other was saying...loudest I'd ever heard a crowd be in my entire life.

FWIW, I'd reeeeaaaalllly like to know if anyone was at the LSU game after Katrina. I was watching it on ESPN and had to turn down the TV--there is no way a crowd has ever been louder than that one.

Anyone here go to that game???

If you're that lone UT fan who was cheering after the (VU grad) ref called Gafney a TD...all I've gotta say is you're lucky there was about 15 rows between me and you bc I was going to beat the holy hell outta you if I found you. (True story, BTW)

Anyway...I can't speak for the rest of VN, but when something "bad" happens I've found its best that I sit down and don't say a word, lest the 10 mile long string of obscenities come out of my mouth and/or me make another 3 or 4 year old cry again. (Unfortunately the latter is true to, however unintentional it was...I've tried to be respectful ever since---wanna feel horrible and stupid? Make a child cry b/c you're pissed off at the game)
