He's a star level coach. One of those names that programs will rue not landing.

Strong has strong ties to Florida recruiting, which we don't have at the moment. That's a fact. Strong has/had a chip on his shoulder with UF, not giving him the job after Urban because of personal life. That's a fact. Strong would have had our defense rolling from Day 1. You can't say he would have had same record here as he does in Texas. Different leagues and styles of teams. Still to this day I wish we would have hired Strong instead of Butch. Strong is better recruiter and it's not like Butch has done a better a job either.

Can't compare the two. Completely hypothetical. One thing that is certain is recruiting prowess and staff. Strong was the clear and better option between him and Butch.

I've been a Tennessee supporter for more years than I want to admit. However, other than Johnny Major ( and maybe Barnes if you consider him one), UT has never spent the money to hire a "name" coach. Their pattern has nearly always been to place a cheap bet on a long shot and hope for a good return on its investment. I can't imagine the University doing anything else.

You don't fire a coach for one season of not meeting expectations. That's dumb. Herman loses two ugly ones, against teams with inferior talent, and half the posters not this board wants him as our coach. Sometimes you crap the bed.

FTR, UT doubled CBJ's salary and that of his assistants when they were hired away from Cincinnati. UT made CBJ a multimillionaire and the 18th highest paid coach in CFB. He's paid more than David Shaw, Gary Patterson, Bobby Petrino and Mike Gundy-- all of whom have more impressive records. And UT paid what it took to get Shoop. I'm sure UT would pay what it takes to get a hotshot OC. Hiring DeBord was CBJ's choice-- and money wasn't a factor.

Sorry, but with UT, there is no money issue. All of these boosters that are worth 750 Million or more could end this with a drop of a hat, regardless of what university admin says, thinks, or feels. These boosters would rather "renovate" Neyland than spend a 1/10th of that money to actually hire a 5 star coach. Morons.

What is a 5 start coach? How many times has a coach been successful one place and flopped another? The chart showing coaching salaries doesn't really prove that salary and performance are related - Charlie Strong makes a lot and Kevin Sumlin is just behind him on the chart. Sumlin's record has been better this year, but last year the whole program resembled a load of tires burning in a dumpster.

Oh, yeah, Les Miles was way up the list in salary. Both the MSU guys - Dantonio and Mullins, and James Franklin are in the top 20 right along with Butch, and all are paid more than Butch. Money isn't the issue, and more money doesn't necessarily equate to better coaching.

Now, do I think Butch Jones' resume was good enough to become UT's head coach - not a chance. Do I think he was the best we could get - nope. Do I think we need an AD that actually knows more about the sports angle than counting beans - you better believe it.
