Is Memphis the birthplace of Rock ’n’ Roll?

Yes. It also has a strong blues heritage. Add Nashville's country music and you have a pretty strong music state in Tennessee.

We got screwed... It was supposed to be in the pyramid. Another Memphis blunder.

Don't forget Bluegrass and Mountain music from the east end of the state. Strong heritage from west to east.

The lyrics from an NRBQ song:

Tennessee
Now there are folks who like to brag about where they came from
And when they start that stuff I let 'em be
But it kinda makes me proud just to know that
Good ol’ Joey comes from good ol’ Tennessee

Let's give old Tennessee credit for music
Like they play it up in Nashville every day
Let's give old Tennessee credit for music
As they play it in that old hillbilly way

Now, Mr. Red Foley came from Kentucky
Ernest Tubb came from Texas, don't you see
But if all you folks will kindly remember
Mr. Carl Perkins came from Tennessee

Let's give old Tennessee credit for music
Like they play it up in Nashville every day
Let's give old Tennessee credit for music
As they play it in that old hillbilly way

Now, Louisville has got the great Kentucky Derby
New York City’s got the Statue of Liberty
But there’s nothin’ that a man can be more proud of
It’s the Grand Ole Opry down in Tennessee

Let's give old Tennessee credit for music
Like they play it up in Nashville every day
Let's give old Tennessee credit for music
As they play it in that old hillbilly way

Let's give old Tennessee credit for music
Like they play it up in Nashville every day
Let's give old Tennessee credit for music
As they play it in that old hillbilly way

It sure as hell wasn't Detroit or NJ. We may be named with them on a lot of unflattering raklings/lists but RnR grew from the South.

All are great places for pawn shops tho...

The Rockabilly Hall Of Fame is in the City of Jackson...home of Carl Perkins and a lot of other famous musicians. Elvis would come to Jackson a lot and hang with his buddies. Just thought I'd throw that out there for those that don't know. Also, while I'm at it, Peyton comes to Jackson to see his old school chum center Teague who lives in Jackson. If IRC, there was a vote in the USA, put on by radio stations, about where to have the RRHF, and people in Cleveland cast the most votes to have it in their city. Memphis acted like they had it in the bag & didn't vote that much for it.
