Is it that much better than 360?

Depends on what you mean.

At this point...
Does it have a better online presence? No.
Does it have better arcade games? No.
Does it have a BluRay player for movies? Yes.
Does it have more expandability (ex. Linux)? Yes.
Does it have better games? No.
Will it have better games? Depends on what you like.

90% of games will be on both platforms, just like last time around.

There's huge potential with Linux and creating a media/games box with the PS3.

Should be plenty of games.

Would I buy it now over a 360? No way. Will that change in 2 years? Possible.

360 has the PS3 whipped when it comes to the controller and online/downloadable features at this point. Can't say much about the games since it just launched.

Good points, I would like to see COD3 ps3 vs COD3 360 and that would tell me alot.

CoD3 is not as polished or smooth on the PS3. I don't think it support headsets, either. But remember, there's a year more development with the 360 so that's not completely unexpected. There's a learning curve for game developers. I'd compare cross-platform games a year from now when PS3 devs are up to speed and in a groove.

That's one of the reasons you can't compare games right now. Resistance on the PS3 is smooth as silk and never has any framerate problems or screen tearing. Never. Then again, it's not quite up to Gears as far as graphics go; looks great, but not a technical masterpiece graphics-wise. But, the smooth gameplay makes it really fun.

All good points. Except I have always liked Sony's controllers MUCH better than Microsoft's. The 360 seems alittle bit better on this issue- but still hasn't got it quite right. The standard controller for the first X-box was downright awful!

I havn't experienced the new PS3 controller, but I doubt they deviated much from the PS2.

From what I have heard it is virtually the same controller that they had for the PS2, but it has more sensitive buttons/joysticks and it is wireless. Other than that it is the same set-up.

R2 and L2 are triggers now. They feel different and are shaped differently.

No more rumble, so the controllers weighs a third of what it did before. It's incredibly light, which is something I don't like.

I was a die-hard dual shock fan for years. It was my favorite controller hands down until the 360. I prefer the stick placement on the 360 much better for shooters and really any gameplay. I like the size of the 360 controller better as well.

The PS3 controller is pretty similar minus the weight and motors inside. Even still, the 360 controller is better in my opinion due to stick placement, weight, rumble, and button types (like the triggers more than the R2/L2 buttons). Seriously, the biggest reason I like the 360 controller better is the stick placement. Just too close together on the PS and oddly placed now that most games require using both sticks for movement and camera.

I didn't know that the L2/R2 buttons were made into trigger buttons. I can't believe that they removed the rumble feature from the controller.

They didn't want to pay royalties on the rumble feature. So, they made up some excuse that it interefered with their motion sensor technology and dropped it.

I guess it might have something to do with MS owning part of the company that owns rumble technoogy.

w00t!! Just rolled up to the Best Buy on my lunch break and got to play the PS3. It's astounding!

The triggers for L2 and R2 are quite different, and the motion sensing that allows you to turn by tilting the controls left and right was pretty surreal.

Graphics are unbelievable.

Graphics are unbelievable.

Graphics are good, but it's just a launch system and they don't really touch some of the 360 stuff right now. That will be a different story in a year when both machines have fine looking AAA games.

It all comes down to opinion. Sony also has quite a few more options with a couple of great game series... Halo is the only notable one on XBox. Sony, you got Ace Combat, Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear, the list goes on.

Also, as far as controllers go, I agree the 360's is very well-designed. However, there's a reason the Dual Shock has remained virtually unchanged for ten years.

Like I said though, it all comes down to opinion. I expect the PS3 to have the same number of quality games available as the 360 by summer '07 due to the overwhelming consumer and developer preference of Sony in the Japanese market.

I will say this for the 360 that I cant say for Sony. I had to get my 360 repaired and it was gone three weeks. I did not pay one cent. I was never asked for my warranty or proof of purchase. The customer service was incredible and apologetic. I had problems with my PS2 and Sony told me it was going to be over 100 bones plus shipping to get it fixed- I bought a new one.
The 360 has good graphics and some great titles. The online functionality is unparalleled. I got my system preowned from Gamespot with controller and HD for 300. The best selling point to me was when I told the rep on the phone about my PS2 issues and how much I was expecting to pay for the repair of the 360, he apologized for the system failure and said "we are not sony". Three weeks later I have a brand new xbox 360-no problems. I expect that the ps3 will have hardware failures as well but I have not had as much luck with them in the customer service dept. IMO advantage XBOX 360.

I had my PS2 mess up on me back in 2002. I had heard about Sony's crappy CS- and learned that it would be $100 and would take forever to get back.

Solution: I bought a brand new unit with cash, got home, pulled the old switch-a-roo, returned the defective one for full credit.

Boo yah.

I don't know if that would work now. I have not seen a PS3 box up close so I am only speaking from general experience but most of the consumer electronics today are leaving a small cut-out in the box so the store clerk scans the UPC and enters the serial number at point of sale.

That happened from what I understood was a massive, unreported malcfunctioning of 360 units. About 2/3 to 3/4 of the people I know who bought 360's earlier on have had them overheat and have to be replaced. With bum systems on that level, no way Microsoft could nickel and dime it.

I'm grabbing the distro right now and plan to work on this tonight or sometime this week. Folks are getting Linux up and runnning, mounting network drives and running emulators as we speak. If nothing else, I'll learn some about Linux and have some fun tinkering with the new toy.

Here is a screenshot from someone running it for a few days now.

My buddy's 360 was toast in about 2 weeks. He was pissssed

Aren't Final Fantasy and Metal Gear on Xbox?

Gears of War, Project Gotham Racing 3 (will be 4 soon), Splinter Cell 5, Saints Row, Prey, Xbox live Arcade unplugged, Call of Duty 2, Dead Rising, Quake 4, Halo 3, Halo Wars, Forza Motorsport (although I agree not as good as Taurismo in the past), Marvel Universe Online,
etc.

Is there a mouse and keyboard for the ps3 I assume? What kinds of things are they doing with the Linux? Can you post a link? I have some experience with Linux so that would be fun for me if I keep my ps3. Speaking of, any word on the next shipment?

Only Final Fantasy XI is on XBox, which was more like a brief foray into MMORPG's than a FF game. Metal Gear games have gotten ports like a year later.

My problem is that XBox's best games are almost always shooters, and that seems to be about the only kind of game American developers can make any more. Yeah, PGR, Dead Rising, Saints Row, Forza, etc... They're all decent but not great on any level. IMO Jade Empire and Elder Scrolls are the only XBox-exclusive, non-shooter greats to ever be released.

Their solution is simple, Microsoft has to find a way to get into the Japanese market. You get in there, you get the attention of Japanese developers, and the number of games, and great games, will increase exponentially.
