Is it time for Coach Fulmer to get a statue

Yes. Played here and coached here. 100 games over .500. Gave us our only consensus NC since the 50s. 2 SEC titles and 6 division titles. 8 bowl wins. We'll likely never see another coach put up these kind of numbers

x 1000...i don't know how a decade of losing hasn't given us some damn perspective

maybe he shouldn't get one now, but if Fulmer doesn't deserve one with that resume then I'll probably go my whole life without having a coach that gets one.

The record he had when John Chavis, and David Cutcliffe were here was outstanding. They had it going.

I don't know what's wrong with some of you people. Sure, Phil got a little too comfortable towards the end, but the man dedicated nearly his entire life to Tennessee. He won the first championship in nearly half a century and coached some of the all-time best teams we've ever seen at Tennessee.

Plus, he got Bama put on probation. That alone is worth a statue.

It's unbelievable how disrespectful some on here are towards the man. He wasn't perfect, but neither are the rest of us. Maybe you don't like the idea of statues in general. But if you believe in statues, very few if any people are more deserving.

At the very least, show some respect to one of the all-time great VFLs. Jeez.

This. VN eats it's own.

There should be some kind of honor reserved for the elite of the elite (street names would have been good for that but after someone realized street signs are much cheaper than statues we started slinging those around like crazy).

Right now, just Neyland and Summit have statues, and they each have a place in the pantheon of their respective sports that transcends just being Tennessee heroes. Peyton someday may be regarded similarly. CPF, love him or hate him, is a Tennessee hero and certainly nationally recognized but he is not in that pantheon of college football history.

If we want the heroes in bronze, maybe a row of bronze plaques at the stadium somewhere, a wall of heroes kind of thing. But let's keep something set aside for our national legends.

Neyland and Summit coached sports that aren't nearly as competitive as modern day football, IMO.

Sure as long as Doug Dickey gets one too.

As many national titles and conference titles as Phil.

Oh and Majors too since he has more conference titles than Phil.

If Coach Fulmer had stayed on as our head coach, maintained his level of success from the 90's, and surpassed General Neyland in all time wins then yes I would've agreed he deserves a statue. However he didnt. The man got complacent, made some bad hiring decisions, and allowed recruiting to fall off dramatically. I'm not saying I don't appreciate the great years he brought us because I do and I'm all for honoring the man in other ways. However I don't agree with a statue. The ones who deserve that already have statues built.

Also had the highest winning % of all active coaches in NCAA right? Never understood all the hate for Fulmer. Build it soon, he may not be here in 20 years...

The man was a huge part of some of the best years of Tennessee football. Any coach that wins a NC should get a statue. Thoughts?

UT claims a national championship for 1967. By that logic, Doug Dickey should get one too.

I agree. His last years of complacency and sucking up unearned money should deny him any statue. He had run our program into the ground long before Kiff or Dools came on the scene. They just kept it there.

Maybe not a statue, Neyland and Summit were and are icons of their sports, but he does deserve some recognition. Like him or not, he did what few others have. To be honest, I don't know who Shields or Watkins were or who Thomson or Bowling were. There has to be somewhere his name can be honored.

Thompson is B. Ray Thompson, a philanthropist from Scott County originally. His family owned Blue Diamond Coal company. He has donated huge sums to education, both the University and local schools.

Boling is Dr. Ed Boling, former UT president. (Note, there is no 'w' in Boling)

Colonel W.S. Shields, was president of Knoxville's City National Bank and a University of Tennessee trustee. He provided the initial capital to prepare and equip an athletic field. Watkins is his wife's maiden name.

Now, regarding the statue. I believe that should be reserved to those who have passed, an honor for the family to experience. Besides, is there really that much bronze left on the market these days?

But wait.......but wait.....he got lax in his recruiting, and and, he backed into last SEC championship game, and and, he was only as good as the coordinators he hired, and and, he stabbed Majors in the back, and and.....

No! Not until he is six feet under. If he deserves one so does Majors.

I'd be okay with Majors getting one too someday, but it's not as simple as "if Phil gets one, so does Johnny" IMO.....Phil was a much better and much more successful head coach.
