Is it possible for Tennessee's passing game to be better in 2017?

If the running game isn't there with this offense the passing game will not work. It could be worse.

I have a feeling that QD is not as "untested"in reality as many seem to think. Much of the playbook will be available, game 1. This QB transition is about as good as can be asked for.
If the OL comes together as hoped, then I expect Q to bring some serious fireworks.

Why?

Did I miss him under center?

I watched every second of every game.

No QD.

He is mature in the system, but definitely untested.

It's June. Nothing is impossible(This is a football forum designed to discuss Vol football and not some technicality of me using the word "Nothing". Sure somethings are impossible for this year(Win a game played on the moon(With Dobbs on the case, UT could be the 1st to play on Mars) is impossible(Only because we won't play on the moon)), I do like our chances.

Go Vols!

It was a miracle he was able to get passes off at all. Using that stat against Dobbs is as weak as his offensive line.

Calm down Francis, I'm not using it "against him". It's common knowledge that Dobbs's longball stats are low, just pointing out that being 1st in passing TDs in the SEC with Dobbs doesn't tell the entire story in regards to the need for improvement in the passing game next season.

BetTer ! Everybody acts like we are setting freaking ducks ! All the BS about trying not to play Alabama. Seen in article that said that Tennessee was using Adams as a voice all the scrap a stupid Tennessee's gonna blast everyone right in the freaking mouth ! Tennessee is a beast we're about to devour and rip every freaking person apartment homes and people lol I left it cause it funny ! Buck fama! Cheaters!

Well alrighty then! Our 'O'will be balanced enough to keep opposing 'Ds' off balance and guessing. Our 'D' will be better, 121 will defy preseason predictions.

A new QB's best friend is always a good TE to bail him out. It's 82 time!

He's gotta be much, much better this year than he has been to date. Hope we also see a good second TE option develop this year.

I guess it depends on what side of the fence you are on. Some will say yes being positive, some will say no being negative. As for me,I'm on the fence saying I don't know yet, leaning towards hopefully cause that means the team will be better.

If High schooler Jake Bentley can pass for 1400+ yards with USCe talent at WR, either of our QBs should be in the 2000+ range easily. If not we've got problems

It is absolutely possible for our passing game to take a step forward this fall.

It may not happen immediately, because our new starting QB will be getting his sea legs under him the first game or so. Then again, you couldn't ask for a much better Power 5 opponent to start a new QB against than Ga Tech. They arel quirky and difficult when they have the ball, but are absolutely nothing special when on defense.

Not showing Josh Dobbs any disrespect at all, I really appreciate the lad. But the QB and WRs have to develop a natural synch, and I never got the feeling Josh had that with our guys the past few years. Some really nice throws and catches, but no long string of them, as if the lads were all playing with one hive mind.

Here's hoping our starting QB and WR corps get that synchronization going this year. If they do, yeah, we could be significantly better in the passing game, thanks to a more mature and well-rounded OLine.

Go Vols!

Somebody hasn't had their nap today.

These are legitimate concerns. We will be breaking in a new QB, have very few proven receivers, and we have a new oc who has never been an oc before. On top of that, we promoted a guy to coach the o-line who was on staff last year and we all know how well they performed as a unit in 2016. Tell me which part of that isnt true?

Josh Dobbs finished 1st in the SEC in passing touchdowns.

Did they introduce a 0th place?

Only threw 27 in 13 games, not a big number. Great increase for Dobbs from 2015, but 27 is only 2 per game.....and 1st in the SEC last year was 22nd nationally. It can definitely improve if all phases of the passing game come together.

His dad held him back in middle school for athletic advantage for HS. He was as old as any normal college freshman and some sophomores but he is a good prospect. The HS thing is good drama for the announcers.

I'm not arguing it can't improve. But I vehemently believe that it borders much closer to bold if you expect it to.

Stats out of conference are very relative. I think it's better to compare SEC to SEC. I know you don't believe we should care some QB at Toledo or La Tech threw for 40+ Touchdowns

Just providing some context regarding 27 td passes in a season....like I said, it's just not a big number. 27 is the lowest number of TD passes to lead the SEC for AT LEAST the last 8 seasons. The average number of td passes that led the league for a single season in that time period is 32.

I agree that a lot of things need to come together in 2017 for the passing game to improve (OL, healthy JJ and Byrd, emergence of 3rd solid WR, better play by TEs, good rb pass pro, etc).....but I do believe that we'll start with a much better, more accurate passer behind center in QD. Obviously, we won't know till we know, but I do think we can see the passing game improve.

You realize the original comment I replied to said the passing game can't get any worse, right?

Just color unconvinced that we should just assume the next QB will be better than the one who was just drafted higher than any other we've had since Manning. Don't factor athletic ability into that either. Steelers weren't drafting him to run.

People doing the same thing with this o-line. They've been bottom of the barrel and suddenly many expect all-stars.

I hope one of these quarterbacks comes out and lights it up, but I don't think there is any concrete evidence to support that will happen. It's wishful thinking. Not much eveidence to the contrary either, so at least there's that.

I don't think it matters which guy starts as our QB this season because both are very good and pushing each other so hard is going to make both of them even better.

For several years many on here have screamed to use our TE's much more because the middle of the field was wide open and they were correct.

In the past buTch has used his TE's a lot so I have no idea why he hasn't done that with our Vols.

Our new OC is a TE guy and I believe he'll get buTch back on track with lots more passing to our TE's and that will make a big difference in our passing game.

Everyone will be expecting us to be a run heavy team and I believe we will run a lot but I think this year we'll use more passing to open up the run game.

Nobody can deny that the O that buTch runs is very successful most of the time but this season we'll make some changes to really confuse teams because our O line will be better at both run and pass blocking and that will give our QB more time to make accurate throws and our TE's will always be a major factor that the D will have to respect and try to cover.

I also think that our WR corps will be hungry and ready to prove that they can now consistently make plays and there will be serious competition between our TE's and WR's for more targets every game.

We're going to be too good passing the ball to stack the box and stop us.

Our O is still going to move the ball and score and TE's will play a much bigger part of that.

It's going to be a fun season to watch if everyone can stay healthy.

VFL...GBO!!!
