It's lack of experienced players and the kids simply haven't learned everything yet.
The 3-4 D is the best and that's why so many college and NFL teams are trying to switch to it.
Even NFL teams have had to wait to make the switch simply because there's not enough coaches that know the 3-4 expertly and can break it all down and teach it well because it's very detailed and complicated.
Examples of how good...Bama has the number 1 Defence for 2 years in a row, won 1 National Championship and looks pretty good to make it 2 in a row this season and I HATE that, Grrrrr.
Notre Dame...Chip Kelly has the same D coordinator for 3 years now and they've finally recruited good 3-4 players and the kids have finally learned it all so that can play the 3-4 lots faster and look where ND is ranked right now.
A couple of our best D players are hurt, Randolph out for the year and Maggitt has the bad turf toe so it's amazing he's even playing with that pain but it makes him alot slower and he can't get the PUSH hard enough to get off the blocks like he did last year and we don't have enough good depth just yet.
CDD said he always makes his decisions on what's best for our program for the LONG term and he wanted to go to the 3-4 D when he first got here but he couldn't find the coaches with only 2 weeks to recruit before National Signing Day and hire coaches in that time period too and I think that's why most of his 1st D coaches only got 2 year contracts.
CDD knows that if you want to Win the SEC Title or a National Championship you must have a excellent D so he took the risk and made the move to the 3-4 whem he knew he could get some good 3-4 D coaches.
NFL players takes 2 years to learn it all and they practice 10 to 12 hours per day so to expect our kids to learn it all well in the 1st year isn't realistic but I sure wish they were genius kids and could have learned it all fast.
Our Offense is better than we've seen in 10 years now that CDD fixed the running game like he promised at the end of last season and if our D was in the 2nd year we would probably be the SEC East Champs right now because if we would have stopped just 3 to 5 big scoring plays per game I believe we would have Won every game this year except for Bama and we'd be on the way to Atlanta to try and beat Bama in the SEC title game.
I do know that, like Bama and Notre Dame, our Vols can get to being a consistent top 10 Defence with the 3-4 and we all know that Defense wins Championships.
Lots of people like the 4-3 D like LSU uses but always remember that in the National Championship game last year it WAS Bama and their 3-4 D that won it all and Bama did not have a great or well experienced QB winning that NC ring so a really good D can carry a team with only a fair QB and I actually think that both of our backup QB's are going to be alot better than the QB at alaBummer.
When our Vols D catches up with our O then we'll make any team very worried about playing us.
Maybe CDD was looking alot more forward to next year when he knows we have to travel to Oregon and play the quackers plus Bama and our regular SEC East teams and he thinks we can stunn the world with a much better D plus our O that's already better than we've had in 10 years.
If we can fix our D as well as CDD got our running game fixed this year then I'd bet money we'll win the SEC East next year but I still won't be really happy until we beat Bama and Win another SEC Championship and get another shot at another Crystal football but I'm old and crazy so I want it all.
VFL...GBO!!!
