Is it EVER ok to..........

Want us to lose a game if it means the difference between starting over with a homerun hire or returning a coach that has proven to be unqualified for he job? In other words, if you knew winning Saturday meant Dooley returns regardless of what happens the rest of the year, and losing meant he would be dismissed at years end to be replaced with Gruden or whoever you consider a homerun hire, could you want us to lose??

I have to admit, it's debatable for me with no clear answer.

I'm don't know that we could be absolutely 100% certain we would get a "homerun hire" for whatever reason.

However, if we could know 100% without any doubt we would get the best coach and start into a new era of UT dominance at the cost of 1 loss then it could at least be forgivable to hope for the loss.

If you're looking at the long term benefits, you want the Vols to win, but you also know that losing isn't that bad either. Because if Dooley can't get it done, we need to bring in someone who can!

In general I agree with this. For example, the Bruce Pearl arguments a couple of years ago were mostly split right down the middle -- alums wanted Pearl gone over the ethics violations; non-alums wanted to figure a way to keep him around. I would rather lose games than do things the wrong way.

Having said that, I have two degrees from UTK and I'd like to see Dooley fired tomorrow morning.

Exactly. Having integrity and character doesn't mean losing. Should be the opposite, although I suspect football is the sport which challenges the integration of those goals most often.

First of all, its flat wrong to root for a loss for any reason. Second of all its unnecessary as its having no problem happening all by itself.

Those of us who root for the team to lose only do so because we believe it will lead to more wins in the future. In other words, a net gain. It is done only with what is best for the program in mind. Any accusation to the contrary is blatantly dishonest.

Ask Colts fans if they wish they had won their meaningless season finale in 1997.

The decision has been made. If we can hire a homerun then Dooley is gone. Wins and losses are immaterial at this point.

Fans of pro sports teams openly root for their teams to lose all the time, once they've been eliminated and are jockeying for draft position. Nobody questions their True Fanhood.

Rooting for UT to lose to Troy would be effectively the same thing -- rooting for a short-term loss in the hope that it brings about a long-term gain. I can't do it myself, but I understand the sentiment.

I agree wholeheartedly. I honestly think Dooley is already out, and I'm rooting for wins. However, I understand the idea that no one would argue with the firing if he drops one of the last four games.
