Is Hurd a waste of down?

I'm glad we have all the backs we have. Would the game have gone different if Hurd was playing? We will never know. But each back has something to offer that the other doesn't have. That big bast*** Hurd will pound your fricking brain out. Kamara on the other hand is more quick footed and is a lot more able to duck in and out. Both backs are an asset as well as Kelly is. I think the player who is doing better in each game should carry most of the load. Some players do better against certain defenses. We need to appreciate that we have some dang good backs. Did Kamara do better last night than in the past? Yes no doubt. Could he do it every game? i don't know because he hasn't been given the opportunity to be the premier back. Did he make the most of his opportunity? Hell yes he did. i would love to see both of them in the game at the same time a lot of the time.

Trashing? It's facts. This place is so quick to state facts and throw out numbers. Hell, the only stats I'm worried about is that loss we took last night. Keep your stats, because guess what, 5-1 is 5-1 no matter how pretty you try and make it.

I respect the insight you bring to the board, but you honestly just seem pissed that our running game looked better than it has all year last night, fumbles or not.

Hurd is a great talent, just not best fit for this offense. would love to see him block and releas from HBack. he's HD some big plays in passing game.

I think Kamara definitely earned more touches moving forward. The offense looked next level with him in there. He's such a threat with the ball in his hands. I have no doubt he could do for us what McCaffery does for Stanford.

Kamara in the backfield is the answer to our offense. He is much more suited for the scheme Tennessee runs.

I'm anti unk and pro Jalen Hurd. The young man has played his heart out while on The Hill. I still want him playing and doing great things, we are going to need him. I think his "uncle" rankles a lot of people the way he presents himself as if he's speaking for Jalen. If unk is, Jalen get a new pr person cause if unk keeps his crap up, you'll have the fan base turn on you and that will cost you $s going to the NFL as he makes you appear to be a head case and that devalues you IMO. Keep playing hard, stay positive, and help 120 win.

Jalen Hurd being on the field keeps Kamara off the field. We need to reverse the roles and make Kamara our premiere back and have Hurd there to rest Kamara and soften up the line of scrimmage.

I would also like to see more John Kelly because he ran hard as hell when given the chance.

Come on man are you for real? I agree kamara is a beast and Kelly holds his own but Hurd has been getting it done since he stepped on campus. No reason they can't both be on the field at the same time

I've never posted before, but felt the need here.

Hurd no doubt is a beast, and an awesome running back. In no way would I ever question his dedication or anything like that, and we all are grateful for his contributions.

However, almost every person I have talked to who watched the game saw the same thing. Kamara just looks better. He's got such speed and lateral movement that Hurd doesn't have. Hurd has looked slow this year or maybe he has been injured. The offensive line being atrocious also taken into account. But just the explosiveness of Kamara and Kelly is obvious.
Stating an opinion that one RB looks better right now doesn't make anyone a Hurd hater. He is the man and we all know it, and he should continue to play when healthy. But Kamara needs more touches period.

I've gotta disagree, OP. I believe, for once, the OL played one of their best games last night and dominated the line of scrimmage for most of the time. So, that means ANYONE running tailback was gonna have success last night against atm, whether it was AK, JH, JK, whoever...

I don't disagree that AK is probably quicker, but JH has the power to get those tough yards.

Plus, both guys compliment each other. Look at the Florida game. when they were both in there, noone knew who would get it, and I think they need to do the same with Bama, if Hurd is available. John Kelly, otherwise is a great back to step in.

Who is to say that HURD wouldn't have averaged 7 yards per carry yesterday against aTm?? There is no doubt that Kamara is quicker and has better moves than HURD....that is for sure....

But to think or even insinuate that a healthy Jalen Hurd would not have had a GREAT DAY yesterday against that aTm defense both running and catching the ball is beyond ridiculous....we really could have used his skills out there.....and YES, HE COULD'VE BEEN THE DIFFERENCE between winning and losing!

And the OP is beyond stupid in the original post....

In 31 career games at Tennessee, Jalen has one game where he averaged 6.9 ypc and one where he averaged 7.6 ypc (only carried 14 times). So while I can agree that I can't say definitively that Jalen wouldn't have had the same success as AK and JK running the ball yesterday, the odds are strongly not in his favor. I think it's probably not a coincidence that we have by far our best rushing day when AK (and Kelly) is the primary/feature back in this offense.

Agree with you regarding the thread title. OP stated earlier that naming this thread what he did was a mistake. I think Jalen is a very good college rb and I think he's a 3rd to 5th rd NFL draft pick. I just think this offense is more suitable for a smaller, quicker rb who can scoot through creases created with our zone blocking schemes.

All that said, I hope Hurd is healthy and ready to go this weekend for Bama. Hope his.....ahem...."lower body extremity injury" is all healed up.

No!!!! Are you even serious with this?

Hurd is slow to hit the holes. By the time he gets to the line the hole is closing. Kamara is much quicker and gets thru before they have time to react. Hurd can take more punishment but he is a little slow. I realize he is fast in the forty, but he needs to get started faster.

Maybe instead of damning Hurd we should be cheering the fact that both Kamara and Kelly looked ready to join him as prime time running backs. The Vols now appear to have a three headed beast at running back and all three should be valuable contributors. It will be up to the coaches to define roles and divide the touches and another opportunity for all us arm chair coaches to question their decisions...
