Is Heupel incapable of seeing what needs to be done? Or is it something else?

Where has Tennessee defense against the pass ranked the last 5-6 years with Martinez as the coach. I don't know but, it seems like it been in the bottom 30 of Div 1, most of the time.

Not having McCoy & Gibson out there has absolutely devastated the entire defense. When Gibson went down week 1, I knew we were in trouble.. That being said, the pass defense is completely unacceptable. If it were up to me, I’d fire Martinez & Banks the day the season ends, regardless of how the rest of the year plays out.

Without looking it up, I’m 99.9% sure he hasn’t fired anyone in his Tennessee tenure…. I have no idea about his couple year stint at UCF, though. Unfortunately, it appears he’s one of those coaches who’s loyal to a fault with his staff.. This offseason will tell us a lot..

Dude this defense sucks.,

Yes we have some studs on the d line that by sheer athletics ability cause turnovers sometimes but the secondary is straight trash.

If u can’t see it I can’t help you. You need ur vision checked.

You said this defense is exactly the same as the Sunseri defense. That is factually not true. Yet continue to argue. Cry more.

Surely Heupel sees what needs to be done right? He HAS TO right? Or is he simply incapable of seeing it? I would have no issue with firing Banks at halftime and letting Inge call the defense the rest of the way. Would it be a disaster? Could it be much worse? If Heupel doesn’t get rid of Banks at seasons end then, and I cannot believe I am saying this, I want him gone.

This defensive performances are unacceptable and embarrassing.

I don’t think he is incapable of seeing it. I think Heupel is a pretty good guy at heart, and I think his experience being fired prevents him from wanting to fire anyone. I don’t think he has the ruthlessness needed to operate at the highest levels.

CJH revamped the offense in the off-season, made it a point, brought in a former coach? to help with that. I'd say it was successful, thankfully, however they did it.

As for the defense - you see consistent problems. The secondary struggles in zone, general coverage and when the front 4 doesn't get home. Overall, the back 7 are really bad about tackling - and, IMO, some of that is you're not where you're supposed to be. This is Martinez's second stint here with the exact same results, bad. I think Banks can call a defense - but it just breaks down from player through staff.

So if you're not firing anyone (though Martinez is at the top of my list) you HAVE TO do something. Bring in consultants to improve zone defense and tackling, to critically review defensive calls and a safety/DB that can play at this level. You did it for the offense.....now do SOMETHING for the defense.
