Is Helfrich @ OC a legit discussion?

A lot would have to happen for Helfrich to end up at UT and if UT doesn't have an AD in place until January he may be off the market so it may be a moot point. Not to mention, what happens to Mike Debord and if Shoop tries to hire some of the assistants he may want. Does Gillespie or Thigpen make a move? Theoretically, you could be talking about 5-6 major moves that could possibly occur even without Helfrich. I do believe that Martinez and Stripling are probably out; Stripling has been eyeing retirement. But if Stripling wants to keep coaching, then maybe only Martinez unless Thigpen takes another job. On the offense side, as much as fans want Mahoney out he has been with CBJ for a long time like Stripling. Maybe Debord moves to Oline? If it is just Martinez, and maybe Gillespie/Thigpen then I could see the AD pushing for Helfrich assuming Debord takes a lesser role. If 5-6 coaches are forced/leave, then I just don't see the AD pushing for Helfrich as well. Would he want to bring a few guys? There is no way CBJ completely overhauls his entire staff in that scenario or any for that matter, may as well just replace him at that point.

I'm not hearing good things about his (Helfrich) LSU interview.

He is probably a very smart guy who just can't relate very well which may be the main reason he wasn't cut out to be a head coach. Some guys are just good coordinators but nothing more.

Some of the words I heard on Monday were bizarre, strange, and weird. As far as Oregon football, not going to work unless you have a power running game in the SEC. There is a big difference between what Urban Meyer does and what Oregon, Texas A&M, Missouri, etc. do.

Agreed, the speed ball Oregon became famous for looks great in the stat column but a power team will smash them in the mouth.

If the guy can truly adapt to different styles great, but does anyone know this? Who's willing to take the chance and spend big dollars only to find out the square peg doesn't fit the round hole.

I prefer Tennessee spend the money to completely revamp the defensive side of the ball.
You can put a ton of points on the board but the old adage, defense and a great kicking game wins championships is still true today.

Maybe he should have cussed and farted during his interview so Orgeron could relate.

Haha, you might be right.

Let's put it this way... Aranda is known for being a little different and LSU hired him. I heard it was pretty bizarre situation but its not exactly easy for someone to explain someone being very awkward.

Maybe Helfrich needs to learn how things are done here in the south.

This is so weird for me to hear. He was on Russillo and Kanell twice this year, once before he got fired and directly after, and both times he seemed down to earth and really cool. So it's odd to hear it was awkward.

If he goes 8-4 next year with a new qb, he won't be going anywhere and that is a fact.

Incorrect that is far from a fact. If he loses to Ala and LSU that is one thing and even Florida but if he loses to Vandy and/or S.Carolina again he won't be here after next season. That is a fact..All depends on who those 4 losses are. If it's Ala,LSU,UF and GA he "might" be safe but a new QB is no excuse.

Agreed, he is safe for 2 years unless he just pulls a 4-8 Muschamp type season.

If he continues to be the head coach after another 8-4 season for the third year in a row (in year 5)......then we have officially settled for mediocrity.

Message board maxim? :)

haha it should be. I guess I am just amazed how so many people are just perfectly content with that. When that's deemed as acceptable by him next year because of replacing starting QB and key contributors....someone should look him straight in the face and say "tough s*It, should've accomplished it in 2016."

Disclaimer: that Vanderbilt game has made me incredibly ill! Never thought I would have such ill will towards the man. And honestly, it truly sucks.

We will revisit this thread if he goes 8-4 next year. Somebody better inform the boosters of your "facts" because they will be the ones buying his contract out. There is little support among the top 3 boosters for another huge buyout especially on an 8 win coach. Fans are like politicians they love to spend other people's money. Do you really think the powers that be care what the average fan thinks?

They will if the fans stop coming to games.

Yeah, I have no idea. I can honestly say I know very little about the guy. His name was taken off the board completely after the interview. If Canada didn't agree to go to LSU, Sark was going to be heavily recruited next.

Exactly. With a new AD and if we go 8-4,dont win the East yet again and lose to Ala,LSU,Flor,GA and he will lose atleast one game he shouldn't. He's done that every year so far. But if he does lose to Ala,UF and GA that makes him 3-12 vs our 3 biggest rivals in 5 yrs and was a hail Mary from being 2-14Then at best will be 3-2 vs Vandy and God help him if he loses to them again and is 2-3 against them. But to not be able to win the East atleast once or make it to a New Yrs 6 Bowl is inexcusable. Especially this year when the 2nd best SEC team has 4 losses. And when you beat V.Tech,Florida and GA then 4 losses should NEVER happen.

Just hard to figure with how damn weird Orgeron is that there would be a guy more weird than him. My guess is Helfrich probably just wouldn't fit in over in LA,especially under someone as brash and in your face that Orgeron is. Think he would be a better fit in Knoxville.

I don't see Coach O as weird, rough on the edges if not the center... but he seems kind of likable to me.

I honestly see 7-5 next year. The Vanderbilt loss this year was back to the barrel of ultimate embarrassment. This year was the ceiling. I have no idea how in the hell 80% of our fan base cannot understand that. He self-inflicts himself for being made fun of in the national media......then wonders why its happening. Sets at a press conference b****ing about people undervaluing the staff's achievements like no head coach in Tennessee history has reached 8 wins by year 4. He literally has everything at his disposable to be successful. Dave Hart has backed that man since he has been here and given him resources to hire coaches and recruit. The only excuse left is himself. He has misused some of the most talented players that have come through this program in 10 years. Out coached by Scott Satterfield, Kirby Smart, Will Muschamp, and Derek Mason. (That was not a knock on Satterfield either). But whatever. Everyone can use the excuse of a new QB next year to justify a Belk Bowl appearance.

Absolutely they do. If Fans stop coming to games their investments won't be worth very much. The buyout will not be that big compared to the money and support that will be lost if Butch is retained after another mediocre year. There will not be an issue with buyout money, especially getting a competent AD in that could easily raise enough money for the buyout and anything else. And last I checked us fans spend our own money coming to the games, buying everything Vol related, spebding money at games so that argument holds no water at all. The new AD will want to have his prints on the biggest moneymaker for the university and another mediocre and underachieving coaching job won't be tolerated. Not to mention Butch whining that he isn't appreciated,he has already sent out feelers at other schools so that isn't a secret. He better hope improvement is made or he wont be here this time next season.. Guaranteed!!!

Sark and Orgeron together within a hundred miles of New Orleans sounds very healthy.
