Is Fulmer On The Hot Seat?????

After the losing season and the recruiting problems do you think Fulmer is on the hot seat. I have been hearing a lot of unhappy fans calling for his head lately. Personally I think he is a descent coach, but he has been slowly going down hill ever since he got his national championship. I also think that football teams take on the personality of their head coaches and Fulmer doesn't seem to have the swagger that most of the top coaches have. So here are my questions.

1. Do you think Fulmer's job is in danger?
If Fulmer has another sub-par year do you think Hamilton will pull the plug or do you think he has earned at least one more year after that.

2. Do you think that Hamilton's success with the hiring of Bruce Pearl will shorten Fulmer's rope?

3. Do you think Fulmer's friendship with Thorten, Tennessee's #1 booster will give him more time?

4. Do you think Cutcliff can get the offense back on track in 06 ?

5. If Cutcliff does get the offense fixed, how long will he be around?

6. Do you think Ainge will get over his Sophomore slump?

7. Finally, if Fulmer does get the boot, who do you think would make a good replacement?

This is my list of coaches I wouldn't mind seeing on Tennessee's sideline.
(in no particular order)

Dan Hawkins- Colorado Head Coach- I think he has a great offensive mind. I am anxious to see how he will do at Colorado against some worthy opponents.

Kirk Ferentz- Iowa- I think he is a great coach and good recruiter, but I would say the NFL will get him soon.

Pat Hill- Fresno State- I think Pat is an awesome coach and his players always play hard for him. He also is well known and respected by the California high school kids, which would help a lot in recruiting.

Rich Rodriguez- West Virginia- I think this guy has proved himself as a great coach and I think his offense would present prep preparation problems for SEC teams much like Urban Myer's does.

Bobby Petrino- Louisville- I really like this guy, but he wouldn't leave Lousville for Auburn. so I doubt he would come to Tennessee either.

Mike Leach- Texas Tech- I would love to see if his offense could be so explosive in the SEC.

Greg Schiano- Rutgers- This guy is a lot like Bruce pearl, he gets his players to play a lot better than they should be able to.

Greg Davis- Texas offensive coordinator- He won the award for the nation's top assistant coach so he must be doing something right, plus I bet he would get us some of those Texas high school recruits.

Bud Foster- Va Tech Defensive Coordinator and special teams coach- This guy is the real deal. He is an old school hard nosed coach and how many games have you saw Va Tech win because of his special teams.

Dick LeBeau- Steelers Defensive Coordinator- I would love to see Tennessee playing his 3-4 blitz crazy defense.

Norm Chow-Titians Offensive Coordinator- If we want to be an offesive juggernaut, this is our man.

Ron Rivera-Bears defensive coordinator- Ron is a defensive genius period.

I think fulmer is on the hot seat about as much as Joe Pa, which is to say not at all.

One bad year does not define a coach, but it certainly defines our fans. We were complacent and took our wins for granted, and now that we've had a bad season, we don't know how to cope and resort to extremes.

The only hot seat Phil is on is the one he is on too long while reading SI in the bathroom.

If he has two or three in a row lets talk.

UT has finished the season ranked outside the top 25, 3 of the last 6 years. I don't consider that one bad year.

Amen to that. People want to forget about the other years where we finished out of the top 25, got hammered by Clemson and Maryland in bowl games, about players talking on their cell phones during football games, about being owned by Mark Richt and Tommy Tubberville, about not winning an SEC championship in 7 years, about not going to a BCS bowl game in a long time, about the off the field problems, decline of our offensive output, on-field discipline problems, complacency and general decline of the program. It's not just one bad year. It is a steady decline in every aspect of the program.

Nope, UT will honor his contract extension and extend 2 more Dec 06. Fence riders best pick another color to pull for..Let that fashion flow in yourself...Who's Hot, yep thats your team......good luck.........They'll be happy to have you until they lose a game.

I would have to disagree about the steady decline since the team has rebounded 3 of the last six years. A steady decline is consistent-not up and down. That is what steady means. I would say that the program is unstable and needs to be controlled. He has the ability to do it, but does he have the "pelotas". Who knows, we only can wait and see what happens over the next two seasons. If the program has not improved off and on the field, he is gone rightfully so. By improving that does not mean winning a SEC champ every year but competing for one. With as screwed up as the poll system is and the BCS, I consider a NC a media/corp. bought championship. So those are not up to the coaches IMO.

1. Yes it will be in danger, if the ship is not righted this year. If we have a 6-6 or worse, he could get the boot this year, if he has a winning season, even a sub par winning season, i think he's back in 07 for another shot. there won't be a knee jerk reaction to CPF, unless the wheels come completely off.
2. No, but it does give him some credibility if he says he can find a new coach.
3. Yes. Money Talks. and as long as CPF has him on his side, that bodes well for him.
4. Yes. He's ready to get in there and get sh_t done. I think he sees a boat load of talent and can't wait to work with them.
5. good question. If we have huge success (win SEC and get BCS berths in next two years) he'll be a hot commodity again....but reading about him and his family's situation, he may just decide to stay and see if he can succeed CPF as HC.
6. yeah, i do. He can't get help but get better. Most of his issues, imo, were between the ears. Cut will be sure to get this kid up to par, or he won't play.
7. your list is pretty extensive, but if i had my choice, i'd take Bobby Petrino or Norm Chow. I don't think Hawkins, Rodriguez or Frentz are going anywhere, all in good situations now. Bud Foster is interesting....I do not want Mike Leach. the others, i have no opinion on.

A few points on the original post:

After the NC there is pretty much nowhere to go but down. His performance by definition wasn't as good prior to the NC championship either. As BigDaddy says, there hasn't been a consistent trend in UT's performance since 1998.

The list of coaches includes "hot" names but do any of them have the record of accomplishment that Fulmer does? Take for example the guy at Iowa. They were a top 5 or 10 preseason pick and ended up with what, 7 or 8 wins What an underachiever! I like some of the names like Petrino, Hawkins and Hill but have they proven their mettle in an SEC caliber league? We spent the last year and half suggesting the Urban Myth has proven nothing - yet. Leach's offense couldn't get it done against an "okay" Bama team. Bottomline, we'd be trading a known for an unknown.

That said, another year like last year and the seat gets hot. Otherwise, it's just a bit warm.

One more losing season, possibly. I support Coach Fulmer and look forward to a great year though.

While I agree with the idea that there has been a decline recently, I'm hoping that this past year was what Fulmer needed to realize it. All of the problems with talent development, discipline, coaching, etc. came to fruition this year. Some people have been calling for his head for a few years now but I think he has leeway as long as this year is a vast improvement over last year. If its not then he could be in trouble.

To the basic question: "Is Fulmer on the hot seat?"...

The answer has to be yes. In truth he has been ever since he put his name on the dotted line. The thing I like about CPF... one of the things... is that he's OK with that. Knew he would be from the get-go.
As great as the expectations of the fans are, his own expectations for himself and his program are as high if not higher. We tend to forget that this is a driven man for whom failures are exceedingly hard to take.
Look for that drive in the coming season. I don't think it will be difficult to see.
It's my sense that he wants to put this right in convincing fashion.
It's also my sense that those who are most vocal in expressing their displeasure here and elsewhere, genuinely hope that things are set right.

Is he on a hot seat? Damn right. And I promise you he wouldn't have it any other way!
There are only a handful of jobs as good as his. He knows the temperature better than most.

from what i heard last year at the games and on the U he's on the hotseat. if our team performs badly at home and fulmer wins 7 games or less he is gone. fans are split 50-50 on this issue and if things start out badly hamilton will make a switch to fill his new luxery boxes. i predict he won't survive next year and when the fans boo our team of the field, hamilton won't hesitate. he's already got pearl now our football team deserves the same great coach. unfortunatly fulmer isn't it. :devilsmoke:

it's us against the world mentality. I like it. Now he could have done with out some of those comments about recruits lying etc....that makes him look bad, and i'd bet he regrets making those comments.
