Is Foster holding Coker back?

Again, I am neutral on this issue, but an arguement against yours is Coker was the better back last season.

Listen, I'm not disputing the fact that Coker is a better talent with more upside. Coker should be the starter. I was only trying to point out that in the past Tenn. has had great success with multiple back seasons. That being said if the O-line doesn't improve dramatically before the first play of 07 it won't matter who lines up back there.

If Coker is upset that he didn't get more playing time as a true freshmen he has a legitimate arguement. IF he's upset that he got benched for not making the great thats a completely different issue.

I believe the coaching staff said he had 2 problems in practice.

1: He had a hard time with pass blocking.
2: He fumble a lot.

If he was out one the field and did any of these things in a game, we would all be complaining as to why Foster wasnt in the game.

How many carries did Hunt have in the bowl game?

See McFadden, Jones - White, Bush - Williams,Brown -ect. How much more effective would PS have been if the had a speed back to run along with the down hill running of Hunt. UT can be very effective running both Coker and Foster.

Travis Stephens was pretty much a solo back. Of course someone came in occasionally to relieve him, but he pretty much was the main guy.

Travis took a redshirt at the end of his career for a couple of reasons. Travis was a great back and it was great for UT because he was on the tail end of a line of great backs. Who was the last Stephens, Henry or Lewis?

See the last several games of 2005.

Who else did we have to run? 2005 isn't exactly a year that I want to refer to when speaking of offensive efficiency.

My whole point is this... UT is great when they play multiple backs. I'm all for a feature back but what happens when he goes down? 98 would have been a disaster of Henry and Stevens weren't ready to go when Lewis went out.

Stephens was the last. Lewis went pro first, Henry left after the 2000 season and Stephens left after 2001.

We need another stable like that. Looks like this could be the beginning of the next great streak of running backs. One after another.

Arian Foster is no Jamal Lewis. I don't care how much he improves over the spring, Jamal was a downright freak even as a freshman.

Wasn't comparing Foster to Lewis. There was only one Jamal Lewis only one "Little Man" Stewart only one Chuck Webb ect. I just want to see an experienced and effective set of backs line it up every Saturday next year. Believe me we'll need them all at some point.

I don't understand. PSU was successful running the ball down our throat with a guy that had 30 carries.

Who was the last Vol back to consistantly get more than 20 carries per game and what was the team rushing avg. per game? Tenn has utilized more than one back each year for the last decade and a half. Did Cedric hold Gerald back in 04 when they both rushed for 1000 yards. No doubt Coker has more speed and runs hard but the team needs both to be successful.

I don't think we ran jamal lewis enough...

Yes we did. The team motto was "give the ball to Jamal." He got injured all the freaking time because he had the ball so much.

He got hurt in the Auburn game of the championship season. Henry stepped in quite well and Lewis wasn't really ever the same untill he went pro.

I dont know if Coker has a right to be mad at the coaches for playing Foster and Hardesty as often as they did. Fact of the matter is...Coker doesnt break many tackles. In fact I really cant remember that many plays where Coker got hit and kept going, while I certainly can with Foster and Hardesty. Those two are going to be the short yard/goaline guys, while Coker will do the heavy lifting...its a Brandon Jacobs/Tiki Barber dynamic.

If Coker wants to be the sole man and get more then 15 carries, he is going to have to put on muscle and show that he can break tackles, move the pile, and be more then one-dimensional (even though that one dimension is awesome). Plus, dont forget that he redshirted because of a highschool injury and had injury problems last year. And dont think Foster and Hardesty leaving or switching positions will change things...Creer is going to get some carries as well.

Do whatever training that can help him break tackles and stay healthy and he'll be the featured back. Otherwise he will always share the ball...with Foster, Hardesty, and Creer.

Come on Man, what UT football team have you been watching? Hardesty looks like he is trying to imitate Barry Sanders when he didn't have to, all the unnecessary juking and moves running east and west. Now if Coker is in the doghouse about grades, that is one thing. As far as being in the doghouse for on field play, Hardesty should be in that doghouse. However he was a freshman and should have learned his lesson. Coker is the best back we have with Foster looking right over his shoulder. That 1 - 2 combo punch will work well for us any day !
