Is Florida Really a Better Job Than Tennessee?

Yes, Florida is a better job than Tennessee.

Resources and recruiting base aside, the relative success of our last several coaches are further proof.

OP mentioned Muschamp and McElwain, coaches who were fired in spite of a combined 6-1 record against Tennessee.

Lol just stop it. The ONLY advantag UF has is recruiting base. That's it.

If you want to look at how important that is look at Miami.

Miami literally has nothing except a recruiting base. No money, facilities, fan base.....nothing.

UF is a better job...at this moment. In state talent is their trump card, though Miami and FS and everyone else pulls hard to dilute the talent. If we, like UGA and LSU, win at a big level, and secure lions share every year of in state talent, we're sitting OK too. UF more attractive because of recent success and perceptions on recruiting, but UT also pulls hard on traditional power who invests heavily in recruiting and facilities and has one of top 5 most supportive fan bases in the country. It's all about a moment in time. If you went back to the early 80's and before, UT would be called the better program. UF figured it out, and are now a highly coveted program...more so than UT, who hasn't produced a 10 win season in years.

Your football history began in 1990 and BHGS is a pile of dung compared to the venerable Neyland Stadium. Our in state talent pool is getting better yearly.

I'm hearing media folks say that between Florida and Tennessee any coach would take Florida over Tennessee. One comment was that "it's easier to win a championship at Florida than it is at Tennessee. Really? Then why'd you hire Muschamp and McElwain if that were true? The recruiting area is about the only advantage Florida might have over Tennessee.

I think TN is the better job because you have less in state competition. FL has a lot of recruits, but a lot of teams to compete with for them too

I know nothing about how athletic dept are run at D1 schools. No idea how much boosters affect things or how much the University President has to do with athletics. However I do remember when LSU was looking for a coach, lots of the sports shows "experts" were saying the athletic dept, boosters, and school administration was the biggest roadblock to prospective coaches. I'm not sure about Strickland at Fl, but I think with Foley, Florida was definitely a better draw. Even with that said, being a better option has nothing to do with hiring the right coach. Spurrier was a good hire but not a hard chice for school or coach, I think they kinda got lucky with Meyer. All the other hires have been basically a bust (only talking football). Hiring an ultra successful coach is more luck than skill.

On paper? Probably
In reality? Nope. Gainesville is a sewer. The fans are scattered with FSU, Miami, and the others (CFU, FAU, SFU, etc). There is a reason they never won before Spurrier and only Meyer has managed to come close to that level.

Actually brother Gainesville and the surrounding areas are super nice. I know, I live there.

If you think Tennessee is a better job than Florida you probably also thought we were going to the College Football Playoff this year. I wear orange colored glasses like the rest of you but the lack of objectivity on VN is laughable

Tennessee's base is increasing at light speed and in another 10 years we will have close to Georgia level talent in our own state. What's UF going to do then? you will have no advantage.

What makes Florida a better job?

At least we’re back to arguing with the resident Gators instead of agreeing how much we both suck lately.

Aaaahhhhh.... good times are back 👍

Our state’s major population boom didn’t take place until the mid to late 1970s. So it shouldn’t come as a shock the Florida schools didn’t become nationally relevant until the 80s and 90s.

What that means in terms of “history and tradition” is in the eye of the beholder. The kids we’re recruiting today weren’t born when Peyton Manning played at Tennessee.

Now that I have some time to add to the discussion

I think you can win at either place with the right coach. So, for me, it’s not a matter of one place can succeed and the other can’t.

The reason why the recruiting base matters is that a coach can make a one hour drive in several directions and visit a plethora of division 1 prospects. It makes it easier on family life and everything else to be able to target so many prospects in such proximity.

And the amount talent also is a big deal. The schools in Florida did not recruit or missed on the reigning Heisman trophy winner.

The Florida administration with swift decisions have shown they care about winning in College Football.

The folks on The Hill have shown nothing yet but continuing mediocrity.

Stop the madness.

There isn’t anyone anywhere that hasn’t been laughing about how badly Florida sucks the last few years and now all of a sudden, people want to throw out this winning the sec East garbage.

Like it was some sort of accomplishment.

Yeah, tallest midget!

Everyone knows why Mac was fired and that he wasn’t getting it done.

Stop the BS

I hate agreeing with you, but I do.

I think that depends on the coach. The way they fired McElwain after winning the SECE the last two years might give some pause.

If you're an offensive-minded coach and you see the last 3, or last 7 years of UF's offense, with the 100th+ NCAA rankings, you cannot ask for a better time to be head coach at Florida. Hell, you could come in with a 65th ranked offense and it'll look and feel like the Fun n Gun all over again.

That opportunity would override any hesitation about what Mac did or did not accomplish.
