Is Dooley That Bad of a Coach?

College football is way more about recruiting than coaching if you define "coaching" as teaching and motivating players. College coaches only get them for 4-5 years and most players only contribute substantially for 2 of those. So in college its more about getting a continuous stream of raw talent coming to campus than anything else. Look at the teams that win alot and they are almost always the same group at the top of the recruiting ratings. So a more important question than can CDD coach is can he recruit and get other coaches who can. Vince Lombardi couldn't win at Kentucky or Vanderbilt with their current rosters. So its not a surprise Dooley couldn't win at Tennessee with what he inherited. He has more than a few football players for the first time this year so now we get to find out if he's a coach or not.
Exactly,Not only did he walk into a program devoid of SEC talent,he had to scramble and get a staff together pretty quick!I would say alot of them weren't his first choice. He upgraded the staff at EVERY position imo. It's gonna be a great year with 9-10 wins and Top 10 recruiting class!Book it!

I'm all for a reasoned approach and i get the wait and see attitude, but what coach in the SEC not employed by Vandy or Kentucky has ever gone 5-7 and not been on the hot seat the next year?
Both Dickey and Majors were 1-5 in their first years in conference play. Majors didn't go over .500 in conference play until his 7th season. Our 2011 season needs a little perspective. My first attendance at a Vol game at Watkins Shields was at the Mocs game when the Vols lost 6-14. The Mocs fans tore down the goal posts and a riot ensued with Knoxville police dispersing the mob with tear gas. Two weeks later the Vols lost to Kentucky 2-6. The real laugher that year, in the season opener with Auburn, the Vols did not even manage a single first down, as far as I know that is still a record in division I play. The RB coach that year was Johnny Majors and head coach Bowden Wyatt is now a Hall of Fame Coach. Give Dooley time he is building from the ground up.

This is 2012 and by year 3 Dooley has to win or he is going to be out. This is not the same situation as it was then..

Unless CDD team finishes 4 and 8 he will be back. Hart has to contend with new BCS format and bowl reshuffle. The kicking game, John. It is one of the maxims and very questionable.

For those of us that have been around long enough, it is the same situation then as it is now. The only difference between the 2 is the internet, rebuilding a roster is no different then than what it is now.

What NYY does for a living has no bearing on whether or not Dooley can win this year.

My advice for NY: if it is in your blood, coach or you will have too many regrets.

My advice for Dooley: just win.

Can't argue with that. That's the deal with every coaching situation. It may be 1 year, 2 years, 5 or 10, but it's inevitable that DD will not be the coach one day.

Cool post.

With our schedule we should win a minimum of 8 games. We only play 4 good teams. Bammer, UGA, UF and USC. I will judge him on those games.

Not trying to trap you. I think we win 9. I'm not sold on CDD but as a 4th generation UT grad I'm hoping for the best. You seem to be openly convinced CDD will never be successful.
is 8 wins your prediction?

I think we win a minimum of 8. The offensive fire power this team has should beat the hell out of those 8 teams. I'm very curious to see how we do against good defenses starting with UF. Of the 4 good teams we play UF is the most winnable due to their lack of offensive ability.

Beef, what's your prediction for this year?

I know you weren't talking to me, but I predict 8-4. I think we'll lose to Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, with the other loss coming against Florida, NC State, Missouri, or Mississippi State.

My gut tells me that will get him another year, but I think he should have to go 9-3 to keep his job. To have confidence in Dooley, I'd want a good 2013 reciting class and season as well.

I hope he's succesful because that means UT is winning. I just haven't seen it in him.
