Reports say Gruden could possibly have been here before, but a problem with the President's office interfered.

'Like Haynesworth, our Tennessee insider Jimmy Hyams is hearing that it’s Tenneessee’s preferance not to fire Jones before the end of the season.

As for “JG,” that’s Jon Gruden. Volumes have been written about Gruden potentially coaching the Volunteers.

His final comment seems to indicate that Gruden has wanted the job previously – he reportedly has been approached previously – but that presidential interference at the university level fouled those pursuits up.

The cu
rrent University of Tennessee system president is Joseph DiPietro who assumed the office on January 1, 2011.'

Under DePietro, the dancing college president:

Football--middle/lower of the pack
Baseball--bottom of the pack
Basketball--middle/lower of the pack
Soccer--middle/lower of the pack
Volleyball--middle/lower of the pack
Women's basketball--middle of the pack
Softball--upper echelon (thank you Ralph and Karen)
Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field--not sure, but my impression is middle of the pack at best. What did i miss?

Wasn't there a time when we excelled in at least some of these things? Seems most of sports have gone to sh-t since DiPietro showed up. Is this all coincidence?

Sad part is I fully expect him to mess it up this go around too.

Academia has always felt that football and other sports are barbaric and would be happy if they just went away.

You would think with their supposed intelligence they would understand a successful athletic program can help their cause too.

The earlier flirtation with JG was screwed up by Hart, not DiPietro. However, I remain convinced that Botch Jones has pictures of DiPietro in a compromising position with a goat.

Didn't the academic side take over after they left and raise the standards to get in? Are those standards still in place?

Did boosters start taking/having more control after dickey left, or was it mainly that the AD and/or academic people got complacent or just overall worse in regards to fielding competitive teams? Or both?

I think the academic side got involved after all the off field issues that lead to the Fulmer cup.. It hasn't been the same since.

When Bill Haslam becomes the next UT President do you see any of this getting better? Also, do you think UT has a legit shot at Frost?

Fulmer now works directly for DiPetrio. Think he has his ear? He might be able to steer the ship in a little more positive direction now.

Don't know specifics but Hamilton allowed academic side more influence through his tenure. Some things have been changed recently but not back to the 90s. probably won't be without more personal changes at top

Possibly on Haslam move.. depends on who all he uses as athletic influences.. Nebraska and Florida are certainly in play with Frost.. I don't think there is a favorite at this point for us..

Boosters have always had a lot of influence in athletics. that has been the case as long as I have followed things up there. we are not different in that regard than any other program..

Hamilton created a lot of the academic / athletic problems

Thanks. Hoping that the way UF has handled the firing of Mcelwain will turn off Frost. Also hoping that Frost picks Tennessee over Nebraska simply because it's a better job. Just so difficult to win big at Nebraska now IMO. Really think Frost is a superstar in the making.

fans blasting her on twitter on worthless...decision makers will make the decision.. That is their charge

The decision makers have been spending the last 20 years leading us from a championship level program to competing for last in the SEC
