Is defending Crompton a recruiting tool?

After watching CLK's post practice comments today I realized that he blamed everyone except Crompton. He pointed out deficiencies in both the line and receivers. Putting most of the blame on the coaches. He is really protecting Crompton. We all know that Crompton didn't loose this game all by himself. I'm sure there are a number of contributing factors throughout the offense that affected Crompton's play. But he remains the starter without mention of the possibility that Nick might get some playing time.

Could this be a situation that will allow CLK to sale a potential QB and his family on the idea that Coach is gonna watch out for you. If I were a recruit being told that I will be the man next year I might actually believe him based on his unwavering support of Crompton.

If anything, Cromption needs the confidence of his HC. If he loses that, then he may hit a new low (if that's actually possible). If I was a player, I would always want to know that my coach has confidence in me. IMHO.

I don't think defending and playing Crompton is a recruiting ploy.

I'm hoping it's Kiffin's version of Ali's rope-a-dope strategy. JC's has got to keep his hands up this weekend, I just don't know if he can take all those body shots.

What better way to showcase the need for a QB by having Crompton under center. CLK hopes he can get Crompton sound enough to win 7 games this year and come next year a Freshman will be the starter.

It's a team that certainly cries, "Quarterback needed!."

its because it wasint all cromptons fault. i watched the game again, and i suggest anyone to do the same. yes crompton had a bad game and had some bad throws...but everyone had a bad game. he had NO TIME in the pocket. i dont care if your tom brady if the line doesint block then your going to throw picks. its easy to blame him but its not all his fault...

Yes there were other factors, however Crompton lost the game for the Vols. Four turnovers will do it everytime. I think Kiffin didn't blame the kid, because he's a kid and he knows the heat Cromp will take this week. Can you imagine how hard the college kids are on him, not to mention there's no shortage of guys like me ragging him on the threads.

As a coach you never throw a player under the bus. If you want to lose a team start doing that. Coach Kiffin is saying the right things.

Speak for yourself.

Crompton is the sole reason UT lost to UCLA. Period.

So receivers running the wrong routes and tight ends running lazy routes were JC's fault. Your a complete baffoon! And as far as Kiffin defending him,it is what a coach is supposed to do!! Sounds like a Fulmerite, that won't admit how far he let the talent level fall.

Dork! :the_finger:

Aside from Nick Stephens coming in and lighting up, I'd say we've got a pretty good shot at landing a good QB recruit coming in looking for immediate playing time. Not that I follow recruiting *that* closely, but any chance Tyler Bray starts next year?

Short of throwing a completely boneheaded pick 6 to lose the game on the last play, the QB is never, ever the sole reason a team loses a game. Period.

Wins and losses are always more or less the result of team effort.

He said from the beginning that crompton's psyche was extremely damaged from last season and that his main job this season is to protect him and rebuild that psyche.

That is exactly what he is doing.

Bottom line: Game 1 gave us too much optimism. Game 2 brought us back to reality. We all knew this would be somewhat of a rebuilding year. Crompton just isn't good, but is probably our best option. Coach is trying to keep him as serviceable as possible, trying to win as many games as possible, while stocking up as much talent as possible for the future.

What else can we ask for?

Which is more important, saving your 5th year Sr's mental state or winning the game? I could understand it if he was a soph or jr, I say throw him to the wolves Sat and see what happens, after that its Nick's time to show if he is the man for the remainder of this year and next. Whats the upside of staying with Crompton?

well, yes and yes. As a coach, you always have your players back. You may get pissed off and at practice put them through hell, but when its all said and done, barring the player does something really really dumb off the field, you ALWAYS back up your players.

I understand CLK needs to repair the mentality of his QB, but JC just doesn't have the calmness that a 5th year sr QB should have. It's frustrating watching all the open recievers that he misses because he's locked in on one receiver.:furious3:

stu·pid (stōō'pĭd, styōō'-)
adj. stu·pid·er, stu·pid·est

1-Slow to learn or understand; obtuse.
2-Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes.
3-Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless: a stupid mistake.
4-Dazed, stunned, or stupefied.
5-Pointless; worthless: a stupid job.

Example, this post:

Speak for yourself.

Crompton is the sole reason UT lost to UCLA. Period.
