Is Coach Heupel a lifetime contract kind of guy?

I'm against lifetime contracts.

I wouldn't have protested if Pruitt or Butch had gotten the death penalty. Some of you zealots would have executed Dooley, though, and it's just wrong to kill a simpleton.

The moral line is too arbitrary for lifetime contracts.

You never give anyone a lifetime guaranteed deal. When there's no concern about losing the job, you remove incentive. Human nature makes me consider that some individuals might take their foot off the gas and start to coast. Consider Jimbo. Look at how Freeze lost his stinger. Lifetime contracts are idiotic. Anyone who does it deserves what inevitably comes.

I get the impression Heupel isn't driven by money first and foremost. I mean, sure it's important to him, to provide for his family and live a nice life...but I think his primary motivation is a quest for excellence. A need to leave a legacy, the very best he can. "The money's nice, too," if you know what I mean. But he's going after something to do with his father, and his playing days, and his early coaching years, particularly being fired by Bob Stoops, and an itch that he can do this job as good as anyone else, maybe even better, an itch to get ever closer to perfection. All of those elements are buried down in the bedrock that makes up the core of who Josh Heupel is.

Don't get me wrong, he would probably like to have a lifetime contract, and yes, it might make him a bit more complacent than he would be without. But I doubt much. He's chasing different dreams and different ghosts.

I'm assuming this thread was created due to the "lifetime" contract given to Rick Barnes. You need to keep in mind, the lifetime contract for Rick Barnes is more symbolic than anything. He's 71 years old and most likely going to retire within the next 3-5 years anyway. He's not leaving Tennessee to go start over somewhere else. Huepel is still a relatively young coach and as others have pointed out, its never a good idea to take a coach's incentive away to perform. It's bad enough already with all the ridiculous buyout clauses.

If I’m Heupel or Vitello, I would not want a lifetime contract because some crazy AD might come along and offer a deal that guarantees 1.5X the salary of the next highest paid coach in the country adjusted annually.

The lifetime contract for Barnes is more about program stability and recruiting than about Rick Barnes.

Like you point out, hes 71. So give him a contract that automatically extends every year so you can show not only recruits, but potential future coaches that the program and you as AD have a plan in place.

Rick Barnes is a unique case of a coach that deserves a lifetime contract, and also necessary due to recruiting and his age.

I wouldn't extend that offer to any other coach at UT.

Given Barnes’s age. I took the lifetime contract as a sick joke. As for Heupel: Would any of you want Phil Fulmer as the coach right now instead of Heupel? I’m pretty sure Phil still wants the job.
