Well idk if they fire Richt if they didn’t have an alumnus who was the biggest coordinator in the game at the time ready to step in as HC. Their real luck came when they recruited a so so player in the 90s and he went on to be a great coach.

As far as Fulmer’s record against Georgia during Richt’s time, that may be part of the discussion but, his specific record against him is not.

I have nothing against Fulmer. I thought it was a huge mistake to fire him, said so at the time. He was a train wreck at AD though, so I kindly hope he enjoys his retirement and just shakes hands and raises money from now on. Gotta call major bull**** on you not implying anything, of course you were, you were "inquiring other's thoughts" as to whether UT would "settle" for a Richt/Pelini in Heupel. That's not a compliment to anyone involved. You just forgot Fulmer had a losing head to head record against Richt, and otherwise had a pretty similar career statistically (Stoerner's fumble and it's rewards aside) so you are trying to change the subject. It's embarrassing for you, I get it. You should just own up to it though, it's the best thing to do and people respect it alot more than trying to deny and deflect. I've been message boarding since the internet started, we all stick our foot in our mouths sometimes, you just need to summon the courage here to admit it.

Too early to tell for me. BUT if he cannot produce a win over UGA this season or next, it becomes he’s our Mark Richt.

All I know is that I didn’t/don’t see anybody leaping at the chance to hire him as a head coach. That tells me all I need to know.

The point stands though. When they hired Smart he was far from a sure thing. No coordinator is a sure thing. That’s all I’m saying. Richt wasn’t when he was hired. Most head coaches aren’t sure things either, you just have more relevant experience to go on than a coordinator.

He was one of those coaches son safeties several teams had in the 90's and 00's that were B+ athletes with A+ knowledge of the game, what they were supposed to be doing and what defense they were supposed to be in. LSU had a guy like him on one of their good teams.

I think Pelini was a declining stock. The offenses he had were not going to be conducive to how college football is played today or in the last 10 years. The dumb thing was hiring Mike Riley and thinking he was the answer. That's one of the 10 worst coaching hires of the last 25 years.

The thing is, without the “old system”, Nebraska would be a difficult place to win regardless. They fired Frank Solich for going 9-3 then stayed with Pelini for however many years averaging that many wins. There is not a large enough population density in Nebraska to recruit quality talent and kids don’t want to go there.

I guess using Pelini may have not been a good example. I guess a lot depends on the school.

What is the old system and how could Nebraska recruit in the 90s but not today?

Hope so...

Some of yall forget, or weren't here during Dooley, Jones or Pruitt times. 10 wins this yr would be incredible. Our last game we looked as though we had never played football before. So bar is on the ground for me.

One, the old system was very similar to the one Saban and company supposedly used at Bama. How else do you think they were able to get those kids to go to the middle of frozen nowhere? Second, those boys on those teams weren’t just cornfed.

The next 2 years are rebuilds. If we haven’t at least won a playoff game or played for an SEC Championship by Faizon’s second year and it’s still due to the same issues of losing 1 game a year we shouldn’t and not being able to play complete games on the road it may be time to start talking about him being another Richt though

It happens--but he had the program on solid footing and Kirby just took it over the top. Similar to Majors/Fulmer I suppose. We were just a dumpster fire for over a decade and I'm happy to be somewhat relevant again. So even if CJH doesn't get us to the promise land, at least we look more enticing for another coach. No elite coaches wanted to come here. It's so hard to win a title and honestly I'd be happy with 9-10 wins each year. That at least gives you a shot at the playoff and making a run. My Vol football soul has been humbled over the last decade, and I appreciate what CJH has done. Also, I love seeing the defense coming back like last season and being solid.

Kirby has had the massive benefit of having full financial backing. Richt got in trouble with the NCAA for paying assistance out of his own pocket bc the university didn't want to pay more.
