It always seemed like Georgia under Mark Richt won 8-10 games a year, went bowling, always had a shot to win the east and occasionally did, including an occasional SECCG championship. He also had success on the recruiting trail. However every year Georgia would drop a game they were not supposed to due to questionable coaching decisions, eternal conflict would lead some Georgia fans asking, "has Richt lost control of the team?" Then the team would rallied behind their coach and finish strong.

This year reminds me strongly of a Richt type season. I also think that Butch and Richt have many similarities in terms character and likability. Could this be the norm?

This does not mean Butch will have the same kind of career Richt had at UGA here at UT, but given the similar trends the past two seasons is Butch a Richt type coach?

Butch is the next Richt of the SEC. Agree? Disagree?

If you agree would you be happy with similar outcomes?

If you disagree do you think Butch is inferior to Richt or superior to Richt (at least potentially)? Why or why not?

If you think my thread is utterly ridiculous and pointless then by all means flame away at what you think is a seemingly pointless endeavor or notion. a ridiculous task which ironically is not any differant then trying to impress strangers in the void of space called the Internet with snark and witty comments in order to point out the ridiculousness of other peoples' post having little to no real substance in of itself. Having little to no actually substance in the world your comments are as meaningless and arbitrary as this thread's topic.

So have fun with it. 😜

If he is, I'm okay with that, at least for the short term. We badly need some stability after these past 8+ years. Last year was the first time since '07 that we won more than 7 games... 4 of those years, we didn't make a bowl game, with 5 losing seasons. Let that sink in for a second.

Ray Goff after 4 yrs at UGA 29-18

Mark Richt after 4 42-8

Jim Donnan after 4 32-15

Jones best case 31-20

He's always reminded me a lot of Donnan without having SOS or Fulmer in his heyday in the east.

The Vols are already the "the champions of life" according to CBJ, Mark Richt was always the "Paper Nat'l Champions" according to the local newspaper. I think there is a trophy for the life champs...

Maybe Butch should just hire Smart's best recruiter year in and year out and make up a position for him to coach badly.

Let's see Mark Richt ...

(1) Went 145 - 51 in 15 years,
(2) Won 75% of UGA's SEC games,
(3) Arguably the most successful coach in Georgia history,
(4) Won 2 SEC titles,
(5) Won 6 SEC East titles,
(6) Would've probably won a national championship in 2002 if there had been a playoff that year, and
(7) Went 10-5 in bowl games, with 2 Sugar Bowl victories and 3 Capital One bowl victories

Not sure that Butch Jones being "the next Mark Richt" is such a horrible thing. That would probably make him the 2nd or 3rd most successful coach in UT history. You can make a case that Richt is the 4th most successful SEC coach of the past 30 years, as well (behind only Spurrier, Saban, and Meyer).

Obviously, we all want Butch to be as successful as Nick Saban, but I wouldn't exactly be disappointed if he turned out to be "the next Mark Richt", especially if it's the Mark Richt during his first 8 seasons at Georgia, rather than the last 7 seasons.

I know some of you were spitting out your coffee but we don't know how this will turn out yet. Saban was 25-22-1 in his first 4 years at Michigan State and Butch is 29-20 at TN so far. Only 11 seniors will be leaving from his first signing class, that he only had a short time to throw together, and only a few really contributed. It is too bad Butch had to burn Dobbs's redshirt. Georgia fans are already second guessing the firing of Richt. We just don't know yet but will know more after the next two years because he will be here at least that long. Hopefully he can do it in spite of the loud obnoxious Negavols.

When I saw the title, I thought it would be another random thought of negativity, but actually rational post. First, none of the re-builds by MR or previous GA coaches were coming from as disfunctional of a spot, w/ not only poor coaching since 2007, but every time a coach left, recruits left. Think when looking at Jones, almost have to start at year 3...9-4, and potential for 9-4/10-3 this year. No, we didn't win the east, but if Jones keeps his trajectory in building wins, we won't win the east every year...but if we're in the hunt most every year, then it's not all bad. I'll take a MR comparison over 16 years.

Personally, I think next year going to be in good shape. I think that one of the two QB's on the bench will give us more a passing game, and OL should in theory be pretty mature. Alot of D returns and hope healthy. Plus, if you look at our schedule, I won't say it's any easier, but big games are spread out, as opposed to a 4 game gauntlet. Lastly, if we're in the hunt, it's going to be great to have a late season big game...CBS, College Game Day type game...late November, two weeks to go in regular season, against LSU. The type of game, if we're sitting there w/ 1-2 losses, that can give us great exposure and vault us in rankings if we win,

Richt won the SEC in his second year...he inherited about the same level of talent as Fulmer did in '93...it's taken Jones 4 years to get our talent level close to where those guys started from...
