IRS admits to targeting Conservative groups

Document: IRS ordered conservative educational group to turn over a list of high school and college students it trained | Mail Online

When a Tennessee lawyer asked the IRS for tax-exempt status for a mentoring group that trained high school and college students about conservative political philosophy, the agency responded with a list of 95 questions in 31 parts, including an ultimatum for a list of everyone the group had trained, or planned to train.

'Provide details regarding all training you have provided or will provide,' the IRS demanded. 'Indicate who has received or will receive the training and submit copies of the training material.'

That question was part ofthe tax collection agency's February 14, 2012 letterto Kevin Kookogey. founder of the group Linchpins of Liberty. He had submitted his application 13 months earlier.

'Can you imagine my responsibility to parents if I disclosed the names of their children to the IRS?' he asked MailOnline.

It's 'an impossible question to answer fully and truthfully,' he said, 'without disclosing the names of anyone I ever taught, or would ever teach, including students.'

First, it is an effort by right wing bloggers to make it look like he is just some major network reporter who is saying the WH had to be involved.

Second, its a guy just guessing. He even says he's just guessing.

There was some conservative guy on the news this morning, can't recall who, saying that he is very worried that the right wing bloggers are actually giving Obama cover on this by going waaaay too far, waaay to fast, with no facts behind them. All they do is give Obama and his defenders proof that the outrage is overdone.

Absolutely correct. Titles like the above, which are misleading at best, and simply false in most cases, just give easy fodder to the administration to roll its eyes at the whole thing.

Let's let the investigations occur and see if there is any evidence that someone in the WH masterminded this, as this "ABC political analyst" says. I really tend to doubt it.

But hey, if so, then I'll be right there with you calling for a major shake up. If not, guys like this can just shrug it off and look for the next scandal to make a name for himself, sell some books.

Link? or are you just speculating. and im sure those investigations. you just think they are just a witch hunt and lying the whole time. right?

NPR has been all over this. And isn't ABC a Disney-owned company, which skews toward the left? Maybe I am wrong. Also said on NPR yesterday that Dems in the senate are 'concerned' as well and are wanting answers. Yup, seems all right-winged to me...

He's not an ABC reporter. He's a GOP strategist who appears on ABC.

Sigh. The right wing blogosphere is having some success with their bait and switch tactics on this one.

I said I can't remember who.

And he wasn't saying don't look into it and don't be critical.

He was saying let's just make sure we do it based on facts, not wishful speculation.

I don't know if this has been posted since this thread is 257 comments now but, this IRS agency will be in charge of the Obamacare situation. Can you imagine what will happen when that BS kicks in. Do we want the IRS to have a hand in control of collection of the taxes & penalties when this stupid crap rolls around? IRS will be snooping into your private life till the day you die & they don't give a damn about these intrusions. The IRS will come & pound on your door demanding that you pay up & pay now even when you are flat out broke.

Lois Lerner approved exemption for Obama brother's 'charity' | The Daily Caller

The group’s available paperwork suggests an extremely hurried application and approval process. For example, the group’s 990 filings for 2008 and 2009 were submitted to the IRS on May 30, 2011, and its 2010 filing was submitted on May 23, 2011.

Lerner signed the group’s approval [pdf] on June 26, 2011.

It is illegal to operate for longer than 27 months without an IRS determination and solicit tax-deductible contributions.

Certainly no politics involved. None whatsoever...

Also, Barack Obama had zero clue about the shady IRS. None whatsoever...

Child Please.

yeah I mentioned it earlier. The admin has a vested interest in making sure the IRS comes out of this as clean as possible. That's why I believe some low-level staffers will be fired (and not counted in next month's UE numbers) and the IRS will be declared a fraud-free zone.

the only enforcement for Obamacare is the IRS and Americans must trust that they are as impartial as possible. Of course that's a load of crap but it's what the low info voters who covet their free healthcare will buy

The thing about both the IRS and AP report stories that you have to remember is that the White House has to keep those two at arm's length, precisely because of things like Watergate.

I have every confidence that the GOP committees will look under every rock they can to see if there is any reason to REALLY think that the WH had anything to do with it.

The WH reporters, that is awfully far fetched. And funny thing is, it was GOPers going on the talk shows, along with the likes of Diane Feinstein, at the time expressing outrage over the leak and demanding that it be found. Per DOJ, they interviewed 550 people in that investigation.
Dumb for the deputy AG to subpoena the AP phone records? No doubt. And I would prefer that they had at least taken it to a judge, with input from AP. But somehow orchestrated by the WH? That's just silly -- no reason.

The IRS thing hits closer to home because you can say the WH would have motive to do it, i.e. to target political opponents. As I say, that would be horrendous if true. That's not just firing offense, that's criminal in my mind. But so far there is no evidence of that.

If you see some, let me know.

Leak probably came from the White House. Just like the leak about who took out Bin Laden.

Why would they go that route? Heard quite a bit about this yesterday, some saying this is the first time this has been done. Others said the normal way for the DOJ to operate would be to go before a judge, giving the AP a chance to squash.

I find it hard to believe the leak that supposedly caused the investigation in the first place was so detrimental to national security the DOJ would risk the scandal. Has to be more.

The evidence could kick you in the dick and you'd still claim there's none. Give me a break.

Thanks for the response. I saw just a minute ago on TV that people (R&D) on the Hill in Congress will be trying to repeal some of the smothering Obamacare law that is hindering to doctors & patients & for people that are in need healthcare.

I'm not surprised, would not be surprised if a great deal of it gets repealed between now and mid-terms. The realities of this fiasco are coming to light, watch the Dems run like rats away from a sinking SS Obama.

So here are a couple things that hopefully won't get buried in this thread.

1. Numerous D congressional members sent strong letters to the IRS demanding investigation about right wing groups

2. During the campaign, an Obama campaign website singled out 8 Romney contributors by name and suggested they were less than favorable people. Coincidently? one of those people was subject to an IRS audit (see below)

Hey, if you are going to overreach, might as well go all the way, right? "Not only did Obama personally order that the IRS audit Tea Partiers; the entire Democratic Congressional caucus did!"

By the way, given the income levels of those Romney donors, 1 out of 8 to be audited is probably about right. My only question, why weren't all of them audited? See below for answer.

Because its not politically motivated. Duh.

Scary as hell. Likely just a wet dream, but anyone think this could lead to a real movement to abolish or severely restrict the IRS? The code is so convoluted and complicated, they can make anybody's life a living hell.

Would have been a far superior way to go about it, that's for sure. Its not like AP could toss the records in the meantime -- they are at the phone company.

I'll tell you how this happened. They did their interviews, they reviewed documents, and couldn't find the leak. At best they probably came up with a list of people who it could be. So someone said hey let's get AP's phone records and see if any of these people show up on the called list, a few people nodded, and the subpoena went out.

They just didn't think about it. Pretty bad.

a person would have to be blind, ignorant or a partisan hack to not view this as politically motivated. This was a targeted operation over 2 election cycles.

for all Barack and Michelle claim they want ordinary people involved in the process this sure doesn't seem like they mean it

I understand that this person was not an ABC reporter, but doesn't ABC have control over whom they allow on their news shows?
