In the Persian Gulf War, I actually do think there were some good reasons to enter that war and there were clear, attainable objectives. Public support, however, was pretty lukewarm prior to the war. The public was also outright lied to in efforts to support the war (which I think most people forget about because the war turned out OK). It ended up going well, which is why it ended up ultimately having broad popular support.

In Afghanistan, there was a good reason to enter war but we were short on clear objectives. In the Iraq War, neither of those things existed.

Both wars had considerable public and Congressional support before they began, both ended up being failures, and both ended up being extremely publicly unpopular. Bandwagon jumping. If the Iraq War went great operationally, I don't even think the public would have cared about or maybe even remembered being lied to about WMD.

You said it was wishy-washy, I just want to point out that people completely started out against it. Support started out at 17%, and grew quickly, so not that crazy that it jumped from 55% to 78% right after the war started. People just changed their minds as they became more and more aware, as events unfolded. 55% to 38% is a fairly strong backing.

If you looked at other poll questions, like "Will you support intervention if Iraq does not withdraw," they were scoring in the mid 60's. So if Bush looks at that, and his intel says Hussein isn't backing down...I mean, 65% is a mandate in America.

Not liking facts doesn't negate them. A whole lot of those 'activist' judges were appointed by R's and those deportation stays you don't like were issued because due process wasn't being followed. You saying you understand that due process applies to all and then complaining because it does shows you're an authoritarian, which isn't what we're supposed to be about. If Myanmar doesn't float your boat there's always NK.

There were already signs last night that the markets would be propped up and oil moderated. The stock market took a little bit longer today but as you said it ended up. It’s clear what is the catalyst here so if the stupidity ceases there’s every reason to expect oil and stocks to come right back… until the next moronic move.

And to be clear I’m glad oil came back down and the market volatility eased that’s good for everyone. But he’s gonna do something stupid again soon and we’ll be right back here. It’s what he does. Oh and $85 a barrel is still waaay to high.
