It lasted 19 years and 10 months. We weren't going to stay there for all of eternity. That was never realistic. The reason we keep losing our wars can be summed up in an interrogation of a North Vietnamese senior military officer by American interrogators. I'm paraphrasing as I don't remember how it was retold verbatim, but this is the gist of it:

US interrogator: Who's winning the war?

NVA officer: Obviously you are.

US interrogator: When will you lose the war for good?

NVA officer: We're not going to "lose for good".

US interrogator: Now wait. You just told us we're winning, so that means you're losing.

NVA officer: Sure, you're winning the war right now. But you don't understand. This is our home. We're not going anywhere. But you are going to go home.

The interrogator acknowledged in the documentary that time proved the NVA officer right. The same thing happened in Afghanistan. That same thing will also happen in Iran if we attempt to fight a war and prop up another puppet regime like we did in Vietnam and Afghanistan.
