What the Left Gets Wrong About the Iranian Protests

As the Iranian people mount a furious protest against the nation’s hostile regime, some voices defame their bold resistance as serving the ends of imperialism.

It is valid to be wary of U.S. intervention anywhere—certainly, the United States does not have a glittering track record, and Trump is only adding to the lowlights of American foreign policy—but to write off what is happening as a U.S. (or Israeli) masterplan does a disservice to the people of Iran, who have been doing everything they can for decades to fight their oppressors. They are not pawns in some geopolitical game. And perhaps an uncomfortable truth for some is that they need our help.

In 2009, when millions of Iranians took to the streets to protest a stolen election, they called on then-President Obama for his help. “Ya ba oona, ya ba ma,” they chanted in the streets, a pun on Obama’s name that translated to: “You’re either with them, or you’re with us.” Their calls went unheeded. Whatever happens this time around, all I know is this: The Iranian people deserve to be free, and they will be soon; whether the American left wants to play a meaningful role in their liberation or continue to defame them is their choice to make. But Iranians have long memories.

When American taxpayers are footing 70% of the bill of Israeli operations, that's a pretty damning indictment on the level of parasitism by the Israeli people. That's more than even I thought it was before I looked it up when you said American taxpayers weren't having to pay for it. My guess would've been 20% at most, but we're paying for the lion's share of Israeli operations. Israelis like to boast about how great they are, but they have to rely on welfare from inner city Black American taxpayers because the god of Israel isn't providing. Instead, Israelis have to rely on the money taken out of the paycheck of Tyrone working the fryer at a New Orleans Popeye's Chicken branch. It's like Tyrone's family never truly made it off of Judah P. Benjamin's plantation.

Trump disagreeing with Netanyahu’s proposal to end U.S. “aid” to Israel blows up a lot of lies people repeat nonstop.

Start with the obvious one. If Netanyahu supposedly controls Trump and pulls strings to get favors, why would he ever want that arrangement to end?

The bigger lie though is the one pushed for years by the podcaster-historian crowd. They argue the U.S.–Israel relationship is just charity. America gives. Israel takes. And in return the U.S. only gets dragged into problems.

Then Trump steps in and tells Netanyahu that ending the “aid” would not benefit anyone, not Israel and not the United States. That alone exposes the problem with their argument. If ending it is seen by the President of the United States as not beneficial, then this relationship is not a handout. It is something the U.S. relies on and benefits from.

And if the U.S. relies on it, it is not charity.

Charity is optional. Charity is something you walk away from without consequences. This relationship is leverage. Intelligence sharing. Military technology. Cyber and missile defense. Real-world operational coordination that feeds directly into U.S. security.

Trump opposing the cutoff made the contradiction obvious. Either Israel is a useless burden on our shoulders, or the relationship serves American interests. You do not fight to preserve charity. You fight to preserve value.
