Ipod Touch

Ok, I mentioned the touch in the Christmas thread but I thought this deserved it's own thread.

I picked up one of these tonight and after playing around with it for a couple of hours I'm thinking it may be going back. My biggest gripe is that I really miss the scroll wheel. I listen to a lot of podcasts and audio books that are really long. At times, I need to scroll ahead 5-10 minutes quickly and easily. Very very simple with traditional ipods. It was one thing the ipod always did exceptionally well. With the touch you have a small slider that you touch and slide to the right to fast forward. It's nearly impossible to use it with any accuracy. I haven't watched any videos yet but I here that there is the same issue. You can hold down the fast forward button but it just takes entirely too long.

Other than that, it does have some nice features but I think in most areas it's less functional than previous ipods. It definitely has a cool factor on many of the features. The web browser definitely has some potential for small devices but it's not quite there yet. One thing I found strange was that you can't use your fingernail for precise touching of the screen. It must be heat sensitive.

Another cool possibility is the ability to "jailbreak" the device. Basically it's a way to hack the device and install all kinds of custom apps. However, you hate to have to hack a device to make it worth while....but they are already lots of cool apps like a gameboy emulator.

I am anxious to hear everyone else's opinions on this.

You know Freak, you really don't have to take it back, you can just "donate" it to me if you don't want it.

Actually I don't know anything about this, and am interested in seeing people's opinions or how they compare it to what they do have as my old ipod has the maximum it can store and I'm ready to get something that can hold more songs!

Yeah, I don't adapt to change very well so I'm curious as to what others think but as of right now I prefer the traditional ipods. What size (GB) ipod do you currently have?

Whatever the largest size is. It's not the mini. My sister had it and gave it to me two years ago before she left for Iraq so that she could have something to hold more music for when she went there. It also had alot of problems with staying on and the battery always running out within minutes, so apple replaced it for me, but I'm ready for an upgrade.

Well, the largest size usually doubles every couple of years so it's impossible to know exactly how big it is. If you are looking for more space then you definitely don't want the touch or the nano. I think the biggest hard drive based ipods are up to 160 gb.

Well lets just say its probably 3-4 yrs old. I really don't know, it was just given to me! But I have like 800 or so songs on it, I just want more because I'm too lazy to switch out songs, I just want what I want on there.

I have a 30 gig iPod video and an iPhone.

I don't do the fast forward stuff so that issue is not a big deal for me.

My biggest gripe about the iPod part of the iPhone is the locking (not sure if the touch does that or not). I'm sure I can change the settings but when it goes to sleep you have to hit the button then slide to unlock before you can skip to a new song. It's cumbersome when I'm driving especially (I plug the iPhone into the stereo). You have to look at it to hit the right part of the screen. Also, when it goes into coverflow mode, I can't find an easy way to skip to the next song in shuffle mode.

Not sure I would buy the Touch one only but I like the iPhone.

In coverflow mode click twice on the home button. That will bring up a popup menu and it even works if the phone is locked. It's a little clunky but it's the best option for skipping to the next song.

Yes there is a setting to keep the device from locking itself when it goes to sleep.

The largest iTouch is 16G, but here's where the difference comes into play.

New ones = Flash memory
Old ones = hard drives

Things I do like (some are phone related):

Visual voicemail - outstanding!
Virtual keyboard
Finger scrolling
Texting feature that tracks conversations
Mobile web - not perfect but pretty good if you have a wi-fi connection (Edge sucks).
iPod functionality in phone (one device to carry).

Dislikes

recessed headphone jack that requires adapter
tough to operate in car (can't do it by touch alone)
GSM interference with car stereo on occassion
limited storage (8 gig in iPhone)
screen smudges
