would like to hear a more detailed description, if he gave one. i spent a little time in Fairbanks. wondering how far the guy actually went "Into the Wild." did your friend know the story behind the bus, when he saw it? interesting post, Milo, coming from a big fan of the movie.

Emile Hirsch... Hal Holbrook... wow. Not much else I can say about this movie... Purely amazing.

Watched it last night.......great movie. Wasn't sure I was gonna like it because I hated Emile Hirsch in "Alpha Dog".

He didn't really go into detail about it, since I have not seen the movie or read the book. I am only familiar with the story.

I'm probably in the minority, but I thought Alpha Dog was a really good movie. The ending was a little weak, but if No Country For Old Men can win Best Movie, I suppose that can be forgiven.

just finished watching it. pretty good. i will say though that chris's actions frustrated me at times throughout the movie. he was pretty inconsiderate to say the least. that being said, emile knocked this role out of the park.

Yea I definitely agree with being frustrated with his actions but I think you have to take into account that it's a book and the character in the movie is going to do what actually happened in the story whether we as the audience liked it or not. I would hate it if every movie was written just to make the audience happy that they got what they wanted every time. I'm not saying that you didn't do that I'm just saying as a general statement.

I enjoyed Into the Wild, but there's one thing I'm wondering about.

When he realizes he's ready to leave Alaska and heads back the way he came he cannot cross the river. Why not just walk up or down river and find a way across? You just survived 9 weeks I think it was on your own. How hard would it have been to take an extra day or an extra few to find a way across instead of admitting defeat and heading back to live at the bus? A place where it gets narrow or shallow. A point that has some rocks he can walk across. Maybe there was something in the book that better explained it, but that doesn't make any sense to me.

i read about the story after i watched the movie. everyone that lives there said a mile or so down the riverbank there was a hand operated object that would take you back across the river. also said there were emergency shelters set up pretty much all around him.

people over there apparently thought it was more idiotic than heroic.

I mean he never at any point denies that he doesn't really know what he's doing out there. I think you should just take it more at face value as opposed to questioning his logic...because he clearly doesn't have a lot. I think by the time he had been out there that long he probably was exhausted (both mentally and physically) and wasn't thinking rationally.

Most of these types of stories are like that -- Glorification of irrational behavior. It's just a different perspective, I suppose. While I fully realize the guy was probably an idiot, I can appreciate a good story.

A little late here.....

I just rented this & enjoyed it. I never read the book so I don't know if there's much changed or left out & what not. I know not everything is going to be perfect since no one else was there....
But as for the ending being eerie & ruining your day.....I also rented The Mist. Watch the last five minutes of that movie & you'll sit there thinking "WTF?" .....creepy

I also rented 30 Days of night & Walk Hard. 30 DoN, IMO, was horrible.
I really enjoyed Walk Hard. Not for everyone though.

& I watched all 4 of these movies in one sitting.

Since you brought this thread back up I'll add another comment.

I just bought the 2-disc edition at Best Buy yesterday and was checking out the bonus features and it really goes in depth into how they adapted the story from the book and how the family was involved and how they took people from the real life story and put them in the movie. I found it to be really interesting stuff.

Also the Hal Holbrook scene upon watching this movie again still brought a tear to my eye. It is absolutely tragic to know how things play out when Hal asks to adopt him and he puts it off.

Just finished the book about 30 minutes ago, and I'm not really sure that I want to see the movie at all. I've got a feeling that camera footage will pale in comparison to Krakauer's literary imagery. So much of the "story" is one's perception of it, IMO.
