Interview with Coach Dooley...

I don't think people are trying to get their anti-Dooley posts in so they can tell you "I told you so" later on. I think most people were just disappointed that we didn't get a more recognized name that they could be more excited about. I was slightly because I know that that can hurt recruiting initially, but future recruiting will be based only on his performance, not on the level of national excitement and respect when he was hired. I hope he does make a name for himself in the next few years obviously. I was very skeptical at first, but every time I hear something from him, or see him on ESPN, or see an interview... I like him more and more. I think more of the naysayers will be coming around soon, they will just have to see more results (which he can't give now because it's so early in recruiting and he hasn't coached any games yet). So, they are basing their biases on a disappointment in national recognition and also because of the way we were rejected by several coaches. It's not Dooley's fault, obviously... and he hasn't done anything wrong, or anything to deserve it. He's just in an unfortunate situation because he can't really prove them wrong right now. The worst part of his situation is that if his lack of name recognition (think resume here) hurts his recruiting ability initially, it will hurt his performance in the near future... which can continue in a vicious cycle of mediocrity. I think that's why people are so worried, not because they personally hate the guy or want him to fail.

i think you nailed it 100%. hat is pretty much how i feel to a T. i dont want him to fail and i hope he being us back to the top.....its just hard to see how that is going to happen with our depth and being so young. if he has a horrible year this year it could stain him as being a bad coach and then he wont be able to recruit.

and i know that if lane kiffin where still here we still could of had a horribe year. so in that way its really not dooleys fault. i just hope we can pull off some wins and stay healthy and at least have a season where we can use as somthing positive to recruit with bc dooley is going to need it going against nick saban and urban myer and steve spurrier and les miles, all of wich are household names and all of which who have won a national championship...

Kiffin to me comes across as running from one event to another kicking dirt as he goes. I agree with Sab I didn't see a plan more so than organized chaos. He's got "it" though because the man can recruit and he's sold a lot of people on his chaos theory along the way.

This ^^^^^. Kiffin kinda reminds of the Joker when you mention 'chaos'

Because on a message board, all some people feel they have is their "e-cred". Proving people wrong is what they want to do. Don't get me wrong, it's fun to prove some people wrong, but overall it's about having different perspectives than others for me. That's why I love this board. It's fun, it's witty, but sometimes the negativity can take its toll.

You're funny Eric.

Willin you are right on. Those not on the Koolaide worry about the excitement factor that has a major impact on recruiting. He is as exciting as dry toast. Add the obvious concerns regarding recruiting foul ups and us skeptics are just that, skeptical. The koolaide crowd point to his recruiting of the 2010 class only problem with that is it was Kiffin's class and without the EE it would not have ranked in the top 30. I am waiting on some proof this staff can recruit and I have no evidence yet. They up to this point look like the keystone cops. I would like nothing better than him to prove me wrong.

It was every bit as much the class Kiffin tried to destroy as the one he built. He recruited guys who were committed after saying he wouldn't. O recruited EE's while CLK was saying they wouldn't recruit UT commits. They didn't de-commit. They probably could have. At a minimum they could have tried... and DID NOT. I don't really give DD credit for that... I think they were just genuinely committed to UT instead of Kiffin like some of the others.

If this class was Kiffin's then the one prior was Fulmer's. Of course that isn't true... but it is just AS true.

IIRC, more highly rated players decommitted from Kiffin than from Dooley even though Dooley's situation was much more difficult.

Oh... OK. With two less months to work with they're at about the same point as the last staff. But I guess since Kiffin gave you a tingle up your leg that means he was great and Dooley is nothing.

They up to this point look like the keystone cops. I would like nothing better than him to prove me wrong.

NOTHING any of these coaches have done so far was on par with Kiffin's buffoonery over Pahokee. Not even remotely close.

I loved the way Kiffin tweaked Meyer but his mistake concerning the phone calls to Nuke being a violation were a bigger gaffe than the Thurmond thing.

Dooley may well fall flat on his face but those here who follow and KNOW recruiting believe that UT is in excellent shape to land a very good class that fills the team's needs.

If you really want to give CLK credit for the '10 class then he takes the blame too, right? If so, he utterly failed to get the commits UT needed at OL and DL. Don't tell me what he WOULD have done. That doesn't matter any more than your "feelings" about the situation.

Not really. Lane Kiffin, Nick Saban, Bob Stoops, Jimmy Johnson, Pete Carroll, Dennis Erickson, and Steve Spurrier do, though.

I would rather have some smart, fresh and competent up and comers than people who are on the downside curve of their careers and ones who bolt at the first opportunity to the NFL. I put Fulmer and Spurrier in the first category and the others in the second. We don't need the turnover like we have had recently. The jury is still out on DD, but I believe he has the potential for success and will probably stay for the long haul.

I have to say, I was crushed when FLK left. You're not alone. But I am over it now, so I don't want anyone yelling at me :nono:

I wasn't so crushed because I was sold on FLK, I was very concerned about the turmoil to the program it would create. Hopefully, long term it was all for the better.

Honesty, and I thought this exact same thing and argued with people at the time over it, I don't think he had ANYTHING in mind specifically with most of his comments. There was no "plan" to get UT back on the map and in the papers. It was all as a result of him being a narcissistic fool. He screwed up and said something wrong everytime he opened his mouth. Most of the secondary violations were so mind-numbling stupid you just had to scratch your head and ask yourself "what is this guy thinking?"

It was like we got a 12 year old kid that got to play head coach for awhile and got overexcited about it.

This! He's a total narcissist and pathological. He's a bit of an idiot savant where all his intelligence is narrowly focused on football and he has absolutely no real interpersonal skills. I think he's got good football IQ and can relate to 17 yr olds because he's at about that maturity level himself but I forsee his career and life ending quite badly do to his emotional pathologies and narcissism.

He'll be gaurunteed a winning season next year and other years at USC, but that will be tainted as the program was built by Carrol and he'll have to carry the label of not being able to do much with tougher circumstances.

I mean, anyone who thinks negatively of the almighty Derek Dooley's abilities is obviously insipid. It's not like he's a proven loser or anything.

This winter, Lane Kiffin was handed his second plumb college head coaching job just three years after becoming the youngest head coach in NFL history. Yet his record is 12-21. How the heck did he get the cardinal and gold keys to USC's Heritage Hall? His most notable achievement is manufacturing controversy with both his words and actions.

Just sayin'. . .

Its funny that we are having the same arguments over Dooley that USC fans are having on Kiffin. Did some of you honestly think Kiffin was the answer for UT football? I honestly had a gut feeling that he would be here for 3-4 years max. I feel like Dooley is here to stay as long as he can perform. What exactly did Kiffin do for us anyway? He took a 5-7 team to a 7-5 team? Big freakin deal. He didnt do crap for us. Yeah he managed to get our team back into the mainstream media again. Although I cant say I really wanted all the talk about UT to be negative. The guy came in and him and his crew pissed on this University and its traditions. If you are one that is on the wagon with him still then go and find you some usc gear and get the F outta Knoxville. I am sick and tired of the Kiffin lovers. As far as comparing what he will do in usc compared to what Dooley will do here is comparing apples to oranges. Of course hes gonna get wins there. You could put a monkey in for the hc job there and they are gonna win.

USC fans aren't impressed with kiffin so far. They expect national titles, not minor bowl games.
