Not that his opinion means anything, but Jimmy Dykes advocated earlier that UT should push for Bob Knight or Larry Brown. Pretty sure that both would be consider big splash hires.

Brown has been discussed many times.

Knight has crossed my mind, but that would be a short term solution, that IMO still wouldn't be a great one. I love Knight, just don't think it would be a good hire at this point.

Knight obviously is a phenomenal coach. I doubt he could nor has the energy to recruit much anymore, however.

I think Knight enjoys his ESPN gig too much at this point when also considering his age

The Knight approach will not work in modern college basketball anymore. Not because the game has changed, but because the players have.

Larry Brown would be a spectacular hire.

Why would they be different? Just wondering, I'm honestly not sure, unless you're saying Knight won't kiss any recruits' asses.

I honestly think that names like Brown, Knight, and Lawrence Frank would all be transitional coaches that would be gone within 3 years. However, I don't think that would be the worst thing in the world for us at this point if it keeps us from making a big reach on this hire and would probably make it a much quicker, smoother transition from CBP to the next "long term" guy.

I think maybe he is talking about how kids don't take to that type of coaching and having a more forceful attitude. They would rather have a friend than a coach.

THe more and more I think about it, the more I lean towards Brad Brownell. I'm very familiar with him from when he was at Wright State. He's very similar to Dooley in being young down to earth and very professional. Would be more of a long term situation compared to Knight, Frank, Brown etc

Exactly. Knight won't kiss any recruits' or players' asses. Maybe it's too harsh to say flat-out that his approach "won't work anymore," but there's clearly a disconnect between what he expects from players and what he's likely to find nowadays. There's no way that a bunch of modern AAU kids could meet his expectations. Also, as a Tennessee fan I'm just sick to death of drama, and if you hire Knight you're getting right back into another interminable soap opera.

Larry Brown has been successful in so many different situations that I have no doubt that he's flexible enough to walk right back into college as though he was never gone.

What do you think about Shaka Smart from VCU or Lavin from St. Johns? I have a limited knowledge of basketball so I figured I would ask someone who knows more.

As has been said, if going for a transitional hire, get one that will bring in the talent while he's here. IMHO Knight would not do that.

There's no doubt he knows how to win games, but I would never want my kid to play for Bob Knight...and I'm a firm believer in discipline. Flame away.

Didn't Bobby Knight say something in 2005 to the effect of him preferring to watch paint dry than coach our team? Our job sure has improved.

Smart we can get IMO if the price is right, say 2-2.5 per. Even then he would view the job as a stepping stone.

Lavin would have to be insane to come here considering the easy recruiting grounds New York has to offer.

St. Johns job > UT job. Can't come close to their history or recruiting base.

UT is a much better job.

Does St Johns have a better history? Of course, but what is that history doing for them these days? St. Johns is in a nightmare of a conference. In nearly 25 years, they have won only 2 conference championships (regular season & tournament). In the last 10 years, they have been to the NCAA tournament only twice.

At UT, we have top notch facilities and a conference that you can succeed in.

He wouldn't kiss the governor's or anyone else's azz, either, which would be a refreshing change.

However, if Pat Knight is part of the deal, run away as fast as you can.
